Prayers and sympathy to the families of the killed and injured. Horrible way to finish an event. Does it seem odd to anyone else it was triggered a couple of hours after the winner and frontrunners completed the course? |

No. It was triggered at around the 4-hr mark, when usually crowds of runners and their families are thickest around the finishing area. It seems to have been calculated quite cold-bloodedly, actually, for maximum devastation.

surprised they haven't announced a suspect or that any group claimed ownership. Early reports indicated they had someone in custody but that they were questioning everyone and one happened to be of middle eastern decent. |

Ya know..terrorism just PISSES me off. I wish I had been there in Boston today just to help out with the wounded. I do not understand the mindset of someone that just randomly kills and spreads mass panic and injuries

bassbone's wife participated in the race today. Hopefully Peter won't mind me borrowing from his Facebook page, but here's his account of today's events:
A wonderful, crazy, and then horrible day.
Carol ran the 117th Boston Marathon, her ninth in a row. She loves this race and the crowds, and the competition, and the feeling, and the enthusiasm that is "Boston". It is home town race, being from Massachusetts.
Carol was in the second of three waves, with her starting at around 10:25am this morning. It was perfect running weather, cool and partly sunny, with only a slight breeze. She ran strong and put in a great effort. Charlie, James, and I all saw her running great in Framingham, then in Wellesley, then in Newton, and finally after she finished at about 2:15pm. By the time she worked her way through the medal area, and food zones, and bag pick up, she met us right around 2:40pm. The picture I posted early of the boys and her celebrating her 'win' was taken at 2:42pm.
She was feeling great so we headed right off to go to the car so she could stretch and change out of her running clothes for the drive home. I think we went inside the Copley Plaza shopping area just as the first explosion occurred. We didn't hear either explosion and were almost completely unaware that anything happened. While waiting for Carol to change, the boys overheard two people mentioning that they thought they heard two 'shots' fired, but didn't know what they were. We were oblivious.
We reached the car about 3:00 and headed out to street level. Mass chaos. Ambulances everywhere, sirens, the blue lights of city police cars, the red lights of fire engines, and people, just so many people, with ashen faces hurrying away, away from something, a something we were just learning about.
We switched on the radio and heard details and rumors told by reports on the scene - a scene we were witnessing first hand. We pulled onto Huntington and it was packed with cars going nowhere. The news kept giving more bits and pieces as we inched our way along - about 30 of the longest minutes I have ever lived. We finally reached Dartmouth Ave and the sign for the Mass Pike. Carol and I looked at each other and turned left 'towards' the storm...following a fire truck as it headed around the corner. We stopped when we saw and officer and asked if we could get on Mass Pike West. He yelled to us, "Yes, get out of here" and off we went.
As we drove out of the city, we saw probably 100 state police cars heading in to downtown, all at high rates of speed.
We escaped, unharmed, shook up beyond belief, but all together and safe. We were some of the lucky ones.
I guess it pays to be married to a 'wicked fast runnah'.
Hug your loved ones. It is time to come together against this hate and violence. It must stop. |

I'm starting to think this was homegrown.
"I started running toward the blast. And there were people all over the floor," he said. "We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. A lot of people amputated. ... At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing."
I wonder if this was an attempt to maim a large amount of people by taking off their legs at the biggest foot race of the year.

The bomb used were the easiest bombs to make. They had an explosive material surrounded by ball bearings or just steel pellets. These types of IED's are designed to maime and not necessarily kill. Placed in a trash can or low to the ground means that the majority of the damage would be from the waist down. |

I was worried that people I know and have worked with might have been hurt because we often have over 70 photogs at these races with about 25 or so at the finish line. I called the company and they said that all of our photographers are okay and heading back to the hotel.
I hope the best for every one who was affected by this. |
That gets a little personal doesnt it. |
Here's the event from the finish line, Boston.com's Steve Silvia - raw video.
It's not terribly graphic, but it is extremely disturbing. |
Cory, thanks for posting that video.
In the first couple of seconds in that video you can see photographer in a sleeveless yellow vest and a backwards blue baseball cap sitting on a folding chair, and then opposite him a little further away another photographer with an identical yellow vest, also sitting down...those are two of the photographers from the company I sometimes work for. Again, none of our company photogs were injured.

This is not terrorism. Only acts of terrorism executed by somebody. Until we know they were terrorists, it is not terrorism. Got that? |

Serious; these guys are home-grown, small time criminals who took a few pages out of the book of the ANC in the 70-80's. Target the innocent, not for kills but to maim and cause fear. In South Africa the same tool, also in a trash can, placed where civilians eat or drink. Ex South africans, do you remember the bombs at the Wimpy breakfast/burger franchises? Like we said; you go eat at a Wimpy it will cost you and arm and a leg.
Cowards attacking innocent civilians. May the balls start itching uncontrollably and their fingers turn into fish hooks. |

You guys are almost certainly right about this not being one of the normal groups.
After reviewing the video a few times, I've determined that I believe them to be low-order explosives (ie, black powder), not one of the high-order explosives you'd expect from a well established group (RDX, C-4, AN-FO) - the resulting fireballs and smoke clouds tell the story.

While we were watching the news coverage last night, I remarked to my husband that I wondered when we'd see the first conspiracy theory around this event. Sooner than I thought... |

It's so upsetting reading about this. Martin Richard, 8 years old. He was waiting for his father to finish the race...
