I'm Awediot [Awe + Idiot ~ in honor of those stupefied, dumb struck moments where words fail...or one slips into moron mode briefly], and Dean...It's nice to have already virtually met a few of you, and will be even nicer to kind of meet the rest. Looks like an interesting, informative and fun site, and group of people... I'm more an artist exploring cameras than I am a photographer, and I was better at chopping a couple of years ago, but have since lost the motive to go that way. I like the 'purist' ideal of photography, and have no problem utilizing all the amazing editing tools technology has given me to fake it... Still, nothing quite like that shot you don't know how to filter any improvement onto. That is my goal, rare as it is.
I've lurked for less than a day, read the basics and will enjoy the blanks filling in as I roam around more. Looking for other 'contest' type sites is rather disillusioning, but this one makes a great first impression...so already got my first entry breaking the ice, my 'hi' intro post about done, and can now just look forward to meeting new, creative people and enjoying their work.

Oh my freakin' gawd, that's hilarious!
Reminds me of another line I heard in a movie or somewhere. Sincerity is what it's all about......once you can fake that, you got it made!
We met in the other thread. Glad to have you aboard. Sounds like you'll fit right in....

Ah, here you go. No sense hiding your arrival behind someone else's thread :)
Art should be along shortly and throw some popcorn or something at you in a gesture of marinade or seasoning welcome.
If you will be entering challenges, go get your camera, right now - I'll wait......................... -
No, seriously, go get your camera................
..................................
........... and make sure your time and date are set to your location. More winning entries have been DQ'd for not having the right time/date on them than for any other reason.
Ok, you can put your camera down now. The other thing you need to do is NEVER alter/edit the original image in any way, shape, or form. Make sure your importing software doesn't alter it either. Being unable to provide an unaltered original is the second most common reason for a DQ. |

Thanks everyone...and appreciate the tips tanguera. I did shoot a few pics for the "Beginnings" contest before remembering that time/date stamp rule (not usually set)- so- Set it. ...I like that this isn't a photoshop oriented site (as most are). Being limited to some level of enhancing the image rather than cobble it together with a pile of 'sources' is refreshing in a classic (ulp, lost art) way... And HAVING to shoot the submission specifically for a contest rather than getting to dig through older work to find what matches the theme, is a great pressure to work under. This'll be fun.

Question... How important is it to identify the camera(s) I'm using?

You're one of those "complete pagan rubbernecks" (Identify the movie!) that slows down for car wrecks, aren't ya? LOL!!!

Not terribly important, but we do try to do so for the reasons that site galleries of each piece of equipment are maintained, and people often like to examine those galleries as a part of their gear-evaluation process. |

So, welcome!
Any chance you'd like to share you W1000 portfolio with us? I know I'd like to see it!
..
From what you've said, it seems like you're really pretty much exactly the demographic that DPC appeals to, so I think you'll find yourself challenged and happy here. It'd be fun to have someone to challenge gyaban at his own game around here, so I'm hoping you'll take a stab at some of the Expert Editing challenges as well. Bonus points from me if you really do utilize all the amazing editing tools technology has given you to fake a realistic looking photograph...
We do tend to act almost as a strange extended family here, so don't be shy, jump in and join the 'family' too - don't be afraid to express your true self here, we all do - after all, that's the beauty of 'family' right? :D

And not really. Slightly exactly the opposite.

Good to know and makes sense... I may use different cameras, haven't bothered with lenses since art school, and have no problem appearing poor. It's all good.

I believe that anything on your preferences page with an * is a required field. I don't know if camera is one of those. But you can enter one camera and not change it each time you enter an image. This is more about information for other photographers, so we can see what you did with the equipment. I learned a LOT about photography on this site from that sort of information posted with the entry.
Also, DPC is (uneasily) divided between those who believe there is too much editing and those who feel that the editing is too restrictive. Which means it's perfect because very few people are happy :) There is an expert editing ruleset which allows almost everything, but the source images must be taken by the entrant during the challenge period, unless there are special rules in place, as there were for Art's challenge, in which we were allowed to use images he took. Even rarer is the Minimal ruleset, which is pretty much straight-out-of-camera - not even raw conversion!!!
And if you're an experimental/artistic/weird shit photographer, don't despair of not getting on the front page - there are a large number of alternative ribbons and awards to reward your efforts :) |

I'm presently banned from Worth1000 for apparently causing too much drama in their forum. They like it syrupy IMohsohumbleO. I either ignore it, or I guess do drama. First ban in near 3 years... My profile is hidden, and so is my portfolio there. No idea if I'll be let back in...but lucky YOU get to reap the rewards of my presence (attention whore that I am). I can't share it with you (not quite sure I even would if I could just yet, but I couldn't stop you either)...
[too much to reply to already] Slow car accidents are impossible. I've trained myself to look away from wrecks. I'm afraid I'll see something that will follow me into my dreams.
