having done that sort of thing to an image can you enter it into a challenge or is that breaking the rules?

You can enter it to an advanced editing challenge but not a basic editing challenge.

OK, so now I am confused....

If I have an image that I want to desaturate the backround, and under the Advanced Editing rules, can I create a new layer via copy, desaturate it, then use the eraser tool to bring back the colors on a single element, then flatten the image?

I have tried to desaturate the background on an image (adjustments, hue/saturation, drop-down to each color and desaturate selective colors as a whole), but some of the colors of the single element have reflected on the background, making it impossible to remove that color without losing the single elements colors too.

UGH! Need a degree in PS sometimes....

Would be legal in advance rules, but not basic rules.

Duotone: Any picture printed in two shades of the SAME color

Sorry to point this out, but this is not a duotone. What you are doing is something different. I don't know what the correct term for that is. Anyone else know?
