Do you use a tablet and stylus to edit your photos?

I used to have a Wacom that I liked. Then, I got a Surface pro that let me draw with the stylus directly on the monitor (which could lay almost flat). That was a dream!

Now, that has died and I have a new computer. I gave my other pad away, so need to get another one.

I'm talking about the kind without a screen. Just a pad and stylus.

Any recommendations?

I am still using a Wacom tablet I bought in 1995, so I'm inclined to recommend them again.

I actually use one of their smallest tablets, but unless you're creating paintings bigger isn't always better, since when using it for cloning or masking I'm almost always zoomed-in real close anyway and working with small motions. They did make one with a screen you could work on which was very pricey way back when -- they may have something more economical now -- I suggest browsing their website directly rather than retailers ...

Thanks, Gen!

That is what I did... after you suggested it.

I got a medium size... I had a small one one time that frustrated me when I kept running into the sides.

I appreciate your help!

I also use Wacom tablet and had no complaints at all. Maybe I'm just used to it. Sometimes you want to try something new, but why, if the old one works well :)

Lydia, what did you decide on in the end?
My dog just ate my Wacom pen, and it was such an old model that they don't have pens anymore :-(. So I need to replace it. Not sure what to do. I liked my wacom, will probably go with another one, just curious what you decided on.

Gotta love dogs! Ha!

That̢۪s a bummer.

I got a medium Wacom, but then my computer fixed itself, and I returned the Wacom without trying it out. Soâ€Â¦. I can’t help as much I’d like to.

Let us know what you doâ€Â¦ for when my Surface Pro dies again. :)

I use a Wacom Intuos Pro medium and love it but honestly I don’t use the rotary buttons much (I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts with my left hand) and probably don’t ‘need’ them.

Ha! Yes!

It turns out that it was only overheating.

Fixed that and it̢۪s all good. For now. :)

What does the rotary button on the Wacom do?
I have been looking at the XP pen Deco Pro, and it has that nifty double button, and I thought that is really handy, but maybe it "looks better than it is"? What I mean is whether it is so much better than using the keyboard, as you said. Also I am so used to the size and hardness adjustment on the Wacom Pen, I love that feature.

There are four points that you can toggle in between and set them to do what you want and then use the rotary to execute the feature; for example, I have one button set to layers and I can use my finger to rotate up or down on my layers. Another button is set for the size of my brush so I can use my finger to increase or decrease the brush size, etc. I am trying to train my brain to use it - but I spent so many years using shortcuts on my keyboard with my mouse that my old brain is struggling to switch. I LOVE the idea, just not sure I ‘needed’ to pay for that feature as I am having to work to make it work and I don’t HAVE to have it.

I keep telling myself it is "good for me" to learn new things ;-P

Me too! Which is the only reason I keep doing it! I literally sit down and say, I need to change it up and learn new stuff every day.

aghhh .. those buttons .. even when i read the instructions i still cant work them out .. !! ..
and when my arm brushes against the tablet i often accidently open them ... which i find annoying because its like they are taunting me .. ;)
and the shape dynamics where you can make the brush go to a point or get bigger with pressure just doesnt want to work on my mac .. not sure what i'm missing as i thought i tried everything .. :(

but i use shortcuts all the time .. especially in photoshop .. to the point that i forget how to do whatever it is the 'proper' way ..
life's challenges .. lol .. ;)
