Ever see that happen ? It usually ends up with the original commentor starting a thread berating the photographer for daring to question the comment that they got. I'd love it if it happened successfully more often. I wonder what could be done to nurture that. |
LOL! This happened to me, actually. I made a dry comment in response to what I considered to be a careless, throw-away comment. My comment wasn't blatently offensive or rude but it did point out a grammatical error of the commenter. The commentor responded in a huffy manner. My reply was by way of explaining that their careless comment had provoked my sarcasm. It was (and remains) my lowest ranking photo at 4th and I asked for honest feedback in a forum post. I got a few very thoughtful replies on the thread but this person left a four word negative response without supporting her reaction. On my own photo page, post-challenge, already beaten down, I was unwilling to bite my tongue and restrain my sarcasm. It's not like I invaded her space and sent her a PM.
I gave them the last word which was along the lines of 'I won't be commenting on any of your pictures if I can help it...please disregard any comments made during the voting process."
Ordinarily, I don't take comments personally. This was the exception because her careless comment had the effect of salting my wounds. |

With apologies to those who remember me having said this before:
ΓΆ€ΒΆ It would be useful, if we restricted our comments to the photo at hand and refrained from either referring or alluding to its author.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ If, additionally, we'd be willing to spent the greater part of our efforts studying the photo rather than imposing any preconceived notions derived from outside of it, we'd be approaching, I am sure, a much more workable premise and less incidents of the nature discussed in this thread.

No one is "Forcing" you to vote, if you think most of the pictures are crap then don't waste your time looking at them, nobody is putting a gun on your head to force you to vote. You got some major ego problem and some pent-up anger that's getting released on this site my friend..get help...

Funny, for someone so high on himself, there are no ribbons next to his name. His scores are not that exciting either.

However, the "Gotta enter every challenge even if my picture is poop" mentality still thrives here - especially after reading replies from people that seem to feel the #of Challenges = How good you are. Hint: When you surf my full name on the internet - you find my photos! Hmmm..... what do I find when I surf your name?
To appease the nah sayers - I will load a few other pictures of mine to this web site........ check out my various portfolios in a few days.
For those of you who want to know how good my picture in this challenge is - and it's doing quite nice, thank-you...... Why does it's place or number matter? That I learned a new technique, posted a how to do it, and spent three days giving it my best shot is enough. Where was your effort?
In the future - if you want to avoid sarcastic comments from me - don't waste my time voting on your poorly composed material. And considering some of the poor excuses for a submission I've been forced to view the past two days - I have been *very* tactful - you have no idea what I really wanted to write. Seems very lucky for many of you I don't enter every challenge, and, I only vote or comment on challenges I have personally accomplished...... I'm in the same boat as you. I just know how to sail better. |
I think you should go somewhere else if you cant stand the fact that people are her to learn, the best thing to do if you want to learn something is submit a photo and get comments on it what might be done better, there is no point is dising other peoples work, you have no idea how much time they put in it,
So you are saying you are only good if you have your pictures on the internet? thats funny :)
I dont think you are sailing very well mister
I have seen 4 of your pictures and they didnt impress me at all,
So please try to learn something while you are here instead of dising other people
Edit: yeah I saw the pictures in your portfolio too... :)
Didnt find any of your pictures while looking up your name on the internet, but I think I have seen enough ...

See now, there are people with different motivations for entering the challenge, and that is OK according to the rules. The original and ultimate purpose of DPC was to submit photos for mutual constructive criticism to improve as photographers, using a contest as a mechanism for doing that.
I sumbit MANY photos which have zero chance of winning a ribbon, but ARE withing the challenge topic (usually), and as such are eligible for feedback as to how they could be made better.
If you are a photo snob who only wants to look at photos which are "winners" you should seek a curator's job, and not be judging contests open to the worldwide public regardless of qualifications or talent.
This is a site where your "job" as a voter is to help the photographer make a better photo the next time. Attacking or insulting people in such a way as to discourage them from their hobby or participation in this site is prohibited by the site TOS. |

Unfortunately my shot has colours that peeps feel are 'unreal' and your comment points that out (my first comment). I'm getting happier about the score, has risen to 5.1 (wow). I marked your comment as helpfull because it was and I thank you for it, as well as the ps comment you also described how 'you' would have preferred the shot framed and even desaturated - its all taken on board and during my early learning time this sort of comment is maybe better than 'cool shot'. Not sure you'd be a great yachtsman though after three days at sea ;)

Do you know how to sail? All you've shown us is that you enjoy rocking the boat and making waves to call attention to your self.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....it's a troll!

Well said Heida! I don;t usually get involved in arguments, especially online. But he crossed the line by basically insulting everyone. Criticising a photo is one thing, calling people names and telling them that they are submitting poop is another.

Glacierwolf, if you don't wanna get hate mail, maybe you should choose your words wisely while commenting. I didn't send you an email, but the comment you left on my entry was very rude and totally uncalled for. Perhaps this is a trend and that's why people are upset. Obviously, you have a very poor opinion of other people's work, but you're not much better. You are pretty new too, very few entries. Instead of bashing and diminishing others, you should concentrate in getting better yourself. When you are jmsetzler's, jacko's, gordon's and kevinrigg's level, than that's another story, and even then you shouldn't put yourself in such a high pedestal....it's a long way down and the fall hurts...

I observed a rower. Nothing too elegant about the course either.
To see a plank cut waves without splashing, to dance without sway, now that would be a different matter.

You've been FORCED? Waste your time voting? How on earth did we get the power to FORCE you to WASTE YOUR TIME voting?
Good God, what an ego! I don't care if you're Ansel Adams, your input here is boorish, bordering on the inane. Tell you what: before we "force" you to vote on yet another "what were you thinking, hope you do better in your other hobbies" entry, why not hit the road, pal.

I don't see many trolls who write tutorials on the subject they are providing feedback on.

Hey! I'm one of them - I TRY to enter every challenge. My favorite subjects outside of DPC are almost always NATURE. I love to shoot in Yosemite, the Eastern Sierra, the coast or similar places. That's what I really love doing.
But the challenges make me do things I would probably not ever do otherwise. They are learning tools - from getting ideas that satisfy the challenge and then executing them. And yes, I try to think of things that I don't think others will do. My last image (TP&A) which finished TERRIBLY - almost a brown - showed a plane "exploding" on takeoff. I had the idea, waited patiently for the plane to take off at our small airport, got the image - and then used Photoshop to "blow it up." Even though the score was bad (and I suspected some would react in a negative manner to a reference to complacency after 9-11) - I'm glad I went through the exercise. It helped me learn.
So - I do not subscribe to the theory that you should only enter ones you think will do exceptionally well.
Also, I do not subcribe to the theory that " #of Challenges = How good you are... " It may indicate some longevity but nothing more.

Elegantly put, as usual.
I was browsing through Glacierwolf's comments and I would like to express my gratitude to him for drawing my attention to this lovely photo which I had not yet seen on DPC.

If it would get a troll more attention he would probably write a book. |

Nazgul... Not trying to be mean, and I know that image you put on can be funny to a lot of people, but my wife works with kids who have disabilities and I find the material offensive. Would you please remove it? |
