After going through all of the pictures, there are definately some good ones in the Newspaper challenge, but I think my overwhelming reaction was that about 60% of the photos could have benefitted from tighter cropping. Personally, I think that most newspaper photos are tightly cropped rather than having lots of dead space. Just my thoughts. Anyone else notice the same thing? |

I haven't seen all, but I did make the same observation to myself. Interesting. For me, this probably came up because I'd been the editor of a university student newspaper some years back. I remember cropping a LOT out of many shots...

I think that in "real life" newspaper situations that column width (and sometimes story length) plays a strong role in cropping. But, yeah, tight cropping in newspapers narrows down some subjects to the one-glance, eye-grabbing statement--the one that makes you look at the headline. |

For mine, I actually was thinking about cropping it vertically a fair bit, but decided not to. Because I was thinking, well in a newspaper you really don't see thin pictures do you? :P But that was just my choice. Hope it doesn't kill my score too much. :) |

*nods* I tried to crop mine as I'd see it in the paper...I hope it worked. But years in Yearbook have helped me (I hope) figure out how to do it well enough. ^^;;

For my sanity...how many people actually looked at a news article to see how to crop their photo!! It's driving me nuts in voting!! Every single comment I've made, I've addressed the cropping, in the good ones, just to let them know that they did a good job, because, dangnabit, it's driving me nuts.
Time to take a break methinks, and I'm only on my 21st one. -_- Man, I never realized that voting and commenting as you went took so long and so much out of you.

im just disapointed because i think in my quest to make my shot look like a newspaper shot, i sabatodged it cause im now getting slammed with average under 5 votes.
maybe next time there is a newspaper challenge it coudl specify weather its just a name or if the pics are accually suppost to look like there in a newspaper. (newspapers dont use quality pictures of paper.. FYI). |

Personally all I can say is, I found this challenge to be very difficult for me, not having any experience in journalistic photography at all. I thought it would be really easy, at first. All I had to do was go out there, find an event, take a "newspapery" photo, and slam a title on it. "Hey, how hard can that be?" Right? ;)
Well, judging from the score my photo is getting, I should've listened to that voice in my head, telling me to leave this one alone and wait for the next challenge. =)
Going through all the entries in the challenge has taught me a few things and I now know the mistakes I made with my photo. So it's a learning oportunity, I guess.
Anyway, I'm way off topic here. Yes, cropping is good, but some pictures in the challenge definitely suffered from cropping in wrong places, leaving out what SHOULD be the focus of the photo, based on the title at least. (And some titles simply had nothing to do with the photo at all.)
I can't wait to see the results, that's for sure. ;) |
