And what about this one:
“To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so. If nothing is true, then all is spectacle.”

That'd be Carl Sagan.

Regarding our president, when DJT and the Veep ambushed Zelinsky yesterday All hope that things might turn out alright went out the window. It couldn't be more obvious that we're being steered into the Russian orbit and that alignment with the Soviets is what Trump wants...

Trump is okay for a reality tv con man. What concerns me is that people voted for him, even after a 4 year demonstration of what a terrible president he is. I think it's because there is an entire misinformation industry.

The first term was an attempt at dictatorship. I think this term is more about setting up a plutocracy.

The only hopeful thing for me is that Republicans in general are so bad at governing that when they get control of executive and legislative branches they tend to lose the next election.

But if voters keep giving Republicans chances to dismantle our democracy, they might eventually do it.

It makes me sick watching the news. Jesse was fired 1.5 months away from his one year anniversary. They're claiming all probationary employees are substandard, because if it was a planned workforce reduction, you'd have to pay severance. A government that so blatantly commits fraud against its own employees...

But the crap with Ukraine, that's playing with people's lives. That's just on-beyond sick.

What I find fascinating is how thoroughly he has deluded this so-called "Christian nation" ... if you take any given situation and honestly assess "what would Jesus do?" I think it highly likely that you could expect Trump to do the opposite ... I'm not suggesting he's THE anti-Christ, but he sure checks all the boxes on the job description ...

Thanks for giving me some hope but unless someone stops him very soon a lot of people will die. I have a very strong fear that Putin will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

How, exactly, have you been given "hope" based on the responses in this thread? ... and, on what do you base your "strong fear" for the use of nuclear weapons. Would love to hear some actual thoughts, rather than baiting. Thanks.

1. They could understand my concern.
2. If they don't get Zelensky to resign or manage to assassinate him, what else is there? US soldiers fighting for Putin? Nuclear option seems to be a better solution, it does not involve American soldiers.

I didn't see any "concern" on your part, only "I'm curious".

If the US quits providing military support, either NATO or European Allies step up to a larger degree, or Ukraine loses more ground to Russia, and eventually all of Ukraine. Russia would be stupid to nuke Ukraine at this point and spoil what will eventually be there's, not to mention that nukes could be enough to really engage those on the sidelines and kick Russia's ass.

I didn't write this, but I think it makes sense.

I won't debate it... just giving you something to think about:

And... I'll delete it off of my portfolio in a bit, since it takes up a lot of my allotted space.

the genius of trump is that for 9 years he's gotten people to craft excuses for every impetuous egotistical thing he has ever done.

I am not an American but as America is making a big impact on the world today I have an opinion about Trump too. I think he is going to model America on Putin's Russia - create an imperialistic dictatorship. Democracy is dead and unfortunately it is happening around the world.

I grew up in a communist regime where everyone was afraid of their own shadow, those who spoke up woke up in Siberia, if they were lucky enough to wake up at all. The elections were a joke, there were no other candidates than those from communist party and they always won 99% of the votes.

Freedom of speech? Not if you are threatened with killing of you and your family. This is already happening in America.

I used to be an optimist, now I am a pessimist. I cannot see how and when the damage will be undone.

Who remembers what pretext Hitler used when he invaded Poland in 1939?

I guess I will continue my rumblings alone as I am very concerned about what is happening and how it happened. I read a lot about why a person like Trump could become an American president. This is what I found:

1. personality cult - the followers can only see good things in their leader, are blind to any criminal acts committed by him, of any wrongdoing

2. misinformation - a new word for propaganda, without any doubt with a big support from Putin's Russia to which your president is now very grateful and wants to give it all of Ukraine, I understand this is called transactional politics

3. career politicians - they will work for anyone who can advance their greed for power and money

4. Musk - the anti Robin Hood

5. fear - crushing any opposition

6. Musk again - enormous money thrown into gaining and keeping power

The only hope now is that the Americans will wake up when they realize that all those promises of better economic times won't happen. But by then it might be too late to change anything :(

I have never imagined that in my lifetime US will become a Plutocratic Autocracy.

Margaret, #1 goes both ways. If someone doesn't like Trump, they see everything he does as something nefarious.
