I am new to this and would like some insight as to what (inexpensive) software titles I can use to begin learning. I don't want to start off spending the $625 required by Photoshop, however I don't want to be stuck with a version of software that won't provide me with the multiple effects, and features that are needed to produce quality images. Seeking advice from experienced photographers, for an aspiring photographer. Thanks for your time in advance. |

Paint Shop Pro, Gimp (freeware) are good programs. Also photoshop Elements is ok. |

PhotoShop Elements 2 is often bundled with some hardware or other software purchases; there's a trial verison to download also. Another great one is MS Digital Image Pro 9. ACDSee is a great viewer IMHO. Good luck!!

I've been using Microsoft Digital Image Pro 9, about 60 bucks, very easy to use, low learning curve. You can work with layers, filters (Most PS plug-in filters work). You can get pretty creative quickly with it. Terminology is a bit different than the PS speak around here, does pretty much everything the watered down PS stuff does. I like it. |

Thanks to everybody that replied for the suggestions. I guess I will start off with a freeware program mentioned, and then work my way up from there. I will probably go with the MS Digital Image Pro software to actually get started. Thanks again. |

using Elements is a good choice because then when you do decide to upgrade you're reasonably familiar with it. Photoshop is pretty much the industry standard. that isn't by accident - it's very powerful software.

Another program that most everyone has used at one time or another is IrfanView.
And then there is Neat Image. The free demo version is adequate for a starter but you may want to get one of the better versions after you advance some, but they are still inexpensive.
If you can master The Gimp for Windows you won't need to buy MS Digital Image Pro. |

Buy a Wacom tablet and get Adobe Elements. I believe when you buy the Canon 300D Rebel it's also included.

Faidoi, I see you mention the Wacom a lot. I got the small one, but harldy ever use it. I don't know if it's hard for everyone to get used to or if it is because I am left-handed for writing and turn my paper upside-down to write, but do EVERYTHING else right-handed. Didi it take you a long time to get used to it, or do you think I went too small? Thanks!

BTW, I have NO idea if this would be advisable from the people here who use PS regularly, but I noticed on Amazon today that PS 7 is just over $100 now because PS CS "replaced" it.

Look at all the fun stuff you can do with it.
I intend to go back into drawing as my photo skills are not up to par. It's a lot easier to use a tablet instead of a mouse. |

I uses PSP in conjuntion with PS7. If you can't do PS, I highly recommend PSP. It's a great program. |

If your photo skills are not up to par, I have no hope at all.

Although you will likely end up with Adobe at some point (because its the industry standard). I have held off on Adobe due to cost. I would recommend the two programs I use most, Ulead Photoimpact and Corel Photo-Paint. Each of these programs is under 100$.
Good luck.
