So I plan on travelling to Europe for 2 weeks sometime in December or January. I was curious as to what websites are good to check out prices and things to do and whatnot. I think I would like to either go to Rome or to Paris. Just not sure how to go about even starting to plan something like leaving the country lol. Any help is appreciated =)

It's easy! Decide when you wanna travel, and if your plans are flexible, you'll save a bit. Go to travelocity.com and purchase your ticket. Then look for a hotel/hostel. If you're planning on staying 2 weeks in one place, I would recommend a hostel, they are cheap but comfortable and fun. If you're willing to spend a bit more or if hostels are not your style, by all means stay in a hotel. Two weeks in Paris can be very expensive, specially if staying at hotels. Rome is a bit cheaper. Most of all, have fun wherever you decide to go. If you do come to Rome, maybe we can get together or something. Hope this helps. BTW, if you have a US passport, you don't need a visa.

if you have dates arranged then try //www.ryanair.com
cheap flights all over europe most will be 30-40 euros($25) but if you book in advance you can fly from 99cents (seriously)
alot cheaper than train or bus if your gonna go all over the place.
also //www.ebookers.com for the main trip |

I think that December is the best month. You know, the build up to Christmass, New Year and such. Compared to that January is a dull month.
Don't know anything about Rome, but Paris; Seek a hotel (well) outside of the centre and travel with the metro. The Paris Metro is not so expensive. Could be a lot cheaper, but the downside might be late night travel. Depends on the budget.
Also don't know any websites about Southern Europe.

I saw a very interesting story about Icelandair, which flies from the US to most of Europe, with all routes stopping over in Iceland. They are allowing tourists to have up to a week layover in Iceland without paying any extra airfare. Might be a good way to get to visit Iceland as well as Rome or Paris.

I've spent more time in Europe this year than you could imagine. Rome is a very interesting place to visit, but the traffic suckssssss. One of the best countries to visit during December is Germany. They take the Christmas holiday season very serious and put on some great celebrations. The train system is a great way to travel and you can get passes for 1 or 2 weeks. I booked a tour of Northern Italy through a service I found on the web, they were pretty good and I didn't have to drive. Let me know and I'll give you the contact info. |

Go to your local book store and check out the different travel guides. Each one is aimed at a different sector of travelers and will steer you towards certain hotels and restraunts. If you are a "Lonely Planet" guy and you are using Fodors you are not going to enjoy the ciy as much. If you can't afford the budget accomadations in Rick Stevens then perhaps Insight or Let's Go is more your style. The places you will endup are going to be largely based on the book you are taking your advice from the first time you visit a city, make sure your taste is similar to the editors of the guide you bring.
If you end up in Paris keep in mind that museums have free days , and that in the evening when all the tourist busses are out at the Crazy Horse, the Louvre is close to empty. At noon there are two hundred people trying to get to within a few feet of the Mona Lisa, after six, there might be four other people in the gallery. If you have one bring a student ID. |
