I am looking for a super-wide zoom lens for my 10-D. As much as I would love to have one of the pro lenses, I will need to go cheaper. I've been looking on B&H's website, and there are just too many. All the other lenses I have were bought as gifts, and I didn't have to make the choice! Any suggestions? I've seen lenses by Canon, Pheonix, Sigma, Vivitar, etc. that all appear to the same on the surface, but the prices vary soooo much.

The Canon 17-40 f/4L is a bargain at $689.95, or you can get a Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 for $669. If you need a faster wide angle tha f/4 then there is the more expensive Canon 16-35 f/2.8L for $1369.95

You can't go wrong with any of these 3 lenses.

yeah, but ive seen some for as low as $199 - $500. Are those worth it?

I should really just add this to my sig, save me posting, but:

//www.fredmiranda.com - excellent reviews

I'd go for Sigma if you can't afford Canon glass. They've got an 18-50 now, but it's fairly low quality (lots of distortion, which you don't want in a wide angle), and they're introducing a (probably not too cheap) 18-50/2.8EX shortly, I believe, which should be a nice lens.

How wide do you want to go? The Sigma 24-70/2.8 EX @ $410 is quite nice. (I've got the slightly cheaper 28-70 equiv.)

My recommended pool of options (Sigma wide and superwide zooms @ B&H).

What about the stuff like Vivitar and Tokina lenses that are $200. Is the really low price a sign of low quality?

Whoops, I appear to be an idiot.. Gave you the review to the old 17-35 Sigma not the new one.. The new ones fares slightly better: reviews

I'd say Vivitar is considerably lower quality, and Tokina slightly lower quality. For $200, I'd say you get what you pay for.

I have the Sigma 17-35, I'm not really impressed. Had to go back to the shop for a new focus motor more than once. Just does't feel as SOLID as the Canon stuff.

Optically its ok though.

When it comes to lenses you get what yoou pay for...you have a very good camera body, don't waste your money on el cheapo glass, you'll regret it later.

I have the Quantaray 19-35mm (made by tokina and re-badged as Quantaray)and its decent for the price ($199 at wolf camera) and Im about one of the cheapest bastards you will meet.

here are a few comparison shots with the 19-35 and my 28-200

One last question. A local guy here is always pushing the Promaster lenses. Of course, he is a dealer. But, he says they are great quality. Any comments on Promaster>?

Sigma 12-24 is the only choice, I am afraid. 17mm is equal to 27mm in full frame, hardly super-wide. :/

Unless you get the 20D or the D-Rebel then you can use the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 which will give you an equivalent 16mm...now that's wide angle!

oooh, kewl! i have the canon 17-40 f4L and it's cool and all but not wide enough. i thought about the sigma 12-24 but i like to stick with canon...and that new 10-22 looks like it might be the ticket.

Ok... I think I am going to go with the Sigma 12-24. Ive seen good reviews and heard good stuff here.

If anyone has any objections, speak now, or buy me a new lens later :))

I recently purchased a TOKINA 28-80 f2.8 AT-X Pro lens that i was going to use for 1 shoot at a BB Gun gaming session it was very cheap at 6000 yen about $70, condition was beautifull top class, not a mark on it, but still I thought that after the shoot it would be used by my son or sold or simply neglected until the next dangerous shoot.

Was I ever wrong about a lens... I am very impressed with it for a 3rd party lens and would even rate it above my SIGMA lens of similar focal lengh. I would suggest if you dont have a lot of money try to find something secondhand on E-Bay or yahoo auctions if you want new then may i reccomend the TOKINA Pro series over any other 3rd party lens.

this was taken with TOKINA lens (28-80 f2.8 AT-X pro)

Unfortunately it's an EF-S lens, you can't use it on your 10D. It only fits the 20D and and the D-rebel.

I've enjoyed using my Sigma AF 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX lens.
Here is an example of the fun I have had with it.

There's some nice sharp details on some things in this shot that I'd rather not have in nice sharp detail...
