Just so you understand the premise of a pyramid scheme...

First guy signs up needs 10 referrals to get added to the list of iPod gift receivers.
Second guy signs up, needs 10 new referrals to get added to the list...
...
and so on...
Tenth guy signs up, first guy receives iPod...
...
Second guy doesn't get his iPod until 20 people sign up. Oh, that might take awhile.
...
The hundredth person must wait for 1000 people to sign up before he gets his iPod. Yikes. And so and so on until guy number 1304 wouldn't get his iPod in 1000 years, unbeknownst to him.

It works for awhile because the first individuals to sign up get their gift and are happy. They spread the word that it's a sweet deal and many others sign up. THe more people sign up, though, the faster the list of waiting gift-getters gets. Usually, the only people who actually get the item are the first 10 or so who signed up.

This seems to have subtle differences, in that there isn't a strict hierarchy (i.e person 2 can get 5 referrals before person 1 does, and they'll end up ahead)

If someone I refer gets their referrals faster than I do, they will (theoretically) get their ipod regardless of my status.

I deal with quite a lot of scams in my day job (I work in web and spam filtering).. I've not particularly heard of this 'offer', but I tend to work on the principle of:

If it seems too good to be true, it is.

Edit: Incidentally - I believe the reason they 'give' away these things is because they're carefully dodgying the law that pyramid schemes are now illegal.

No doubt coolhar! I jokingly refer to the "Open Challenges" as "Member Subsidized Challenges". D&L haven't had the need to put up banner ads on every page because of the number of paying members who "pay the bills" with their annual fee and from those who sell prints at a profit (which in turns, provides more DPC income for D&L). And with the recent DPC server upgrade, it is nice to see them re-investing in their "baby" instead of buying a pair of new Porsches. =]

It is pretty rare to find a popular site these days that doesn't bombard your eyeballs with 3 or 4 flashing advertisements on every page...

the dsl upload speed right now is going extremely slow, so ill update with pics as soon as i get the chance. but i did really get it, believe it or not.

EDIT: im me over at docatwu1 (on aim) and i should be able to send you the pics there. its just goin really slow to upload to dpchallenge or any other image site right now.

EDIT AGIAIN: please use my cousins page if your gonna sign up... yes i know it has my name in the url, but this is the page i used to get people to sign up, and this is his referal link, mine ends with a 48 i believe. //www.geocities.com/doctawu1/ipod.html and yes, all the questions through the email are directed to me, i told him id take care of it for him. honestly, it is his referal link, not just another for me.

I still think this is what people should keep in mind.

But why would anyone want any of those computers? An ipod is cool, but those are some dinky PCs, and most of them don't come with monitors, either.

Still waiting on one referral to get my ipod, but I did just get a free $50 gift card to red lobster from a different site.

a free pc is a good pc. no matter how dinky it is. its free. //www.FreeDesktopPC.com/default.aspx?referer=8333543

This is how it remains legal, instead of a true pyramid scheme...There are millions of versions of this from Primerica Insurance to Amway to Quixtar.

They all seem to turn people into creepy reference-hounding monsters. They turn friends into prospective clients...this type of stuff can change the way you view everybody around you and make you obsessed with increasing your 'downline' (or whatever it's called).

Disclaimer: My opinion only, of course.
