Heya all!
Anyone have any experience with Canon's newer 'DO' series lens, namely the 70-300...is the optic quality even vaguely similar if not better than their 'L' series lens in a similar range like the 70-200 (aside from the 'L' being a bit faster).
Thanks in advance for any input!

I had the chance to test it via CPS and was very unhappy with it - especially and specifically to the 70-200L. Its size and wght is the only advantage, but image image image is all that counts to me. So to that end, I was not happy with it. Its does not seem to me to be in the catagory of my 400/DO either... Good luck |

I am the proud owner of this lens and use it for 2 month now (2000 pictures)
- Happy with such small lens (a lens at home is not a lens)
- Dont have to use a tripod... best way to shot ! :-)
- Relatively light (lighter that the 24-70L)
- Good quality, not exellent no L, Good !
- Fast for me
- IS is amazing
- The zoom ring is stiff, i use it as push pull
- Boken is ok
- Quality stop a bit is really good, wide open and at 300 is soft !
- Not supposed to work with 1.4 converter :-(
- Need 100-500 now... so will look the Sigma 50-500 or the new Sigma 80-400 IS that can use the 1.4 or 2x converter... maybe later...

- Always whant to have more zoom power
- Expensive... but hey, money is for that
Check my portfolio... some of the pic is taken with it...
This lens is on my rebell ALL the time
I also have the 18-55 and 50 mk2
Taken at 300... post process in photoshop !

It's Canon's designation for lenses with their Diffractive Optics components. So, in addition to refracting light with glass, there are diffraction grating elements. The consensus seems to be that the DO lenses work pretty well, but do not posess "L" image quality.

You know, for not "possesing L quality image", they are pretty darn expensive! The 70-300 is $1299 USD They have cheaper L lenses.

In Regard to menardmam's referring to 'Boken', just as a note the term is actually "Bokeh" which is a Japanese word for blur... just a note... |

Quick question, are there any sites that have photos taken with various glass for comparison?
I am interested in getting a 24-70mm (or similar) f/2.8 lens to replace my b0rken Canon 28-105mm USM lens. I guess right now the two candidates are the Canon L and the cheaper Sigma lens. |

Fantastic lens. Big and bulky but worth every penny.

If it's focal length range fits your needs you should consider the Tamron 28-75 f 2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical. It's just $369 (B&H) and is rated right up there with lenses costing a lot more. |

Agreed. The 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 are the pair to mortgage your house for.

Sir Jello, I don't own the DO 75-300 but I did borrow it from my uncle on a vaction trip a few months ago. I think the primary thing you are paying for is the convenience factor of having such a compact and light 75-300. Optically speaking it is DEFINITELY better than ANY of other Canon 75-300s by leaps and bounds, but I don't think it quite hits any of the lush color/contrast/sharpness of the L series lens'.
I think you would be much better off getting the 75-200 2.8L with the II series extenders.
By the way, I LOVE your portfolio, may I ask what lens' you are using presently? |

The DO's are a series of lenses designed to compete with the massively successful series of compact bodied lens (quality...that's another discussion). Tamron made a huge market hit with their short body lenses...so here's canon!
