the only prize is the ribbon icon and your photo being displayed on the home page of dpchallenge for a week. depending on how many you win, there may be future opportunities to compete in a "master's challenge," a new concept undergoing its first try right now, actually. people don't get a print of the photo as a prize, either. they have the option of making a print available to everyone, but anyone can do that with their photos. hope that helps.

then, what kind of people usually take the challenge seriously? just give what u guess?

The kind who are trying to learn and who take seriously the level of competition here. You can't possibly win without an above average picture. Good pictures may not always do well, but the top pictures are always good.

People who participate are here to learn. We win outside competitions with the same pictures we do well with here. But we do these to learn.

well, i think people who like the thrill of a challenge enter, and people who want a little more exposure to their art... i'm guessing, also, that feeling you get when you win is a big rush, but i haven't come anywhere close yet. this site is a great site for "teachers" and "students" of photography, those people who know a lot, those people who like to be inspired by the work of their peers, as well as those people who just got their first camera and want to see how things are done.

from what i've seen almost everyone takes the challenges seriously, on some level, but it's really just for fun. there are a lot of other sites that give away prizes, but this one's different-- there's a community atmosphere, where people get to know people, where you can check out "how they did that" in the tutorial section, where you can sell your prints, and where you can just generally be inspired and in awe of some of the great work. to me, it's more like an art gallery i can visit from my living room couch.

There are many ways to "win" one of the ways I am winning is by learning about my camera, about photography and expanding my mind about photo concepts.

What a great prize and I do not yet figure in the best of show area.

I actually think its great without prizes apart from the little digital ribbon that you get on your photo.

I agree whole-heartedly. Some of the prize-giving sites bring in some really bad entries from everyday, casual users-- so many that I just stay away from those sites altogether. This site brings in pictures from photographers who are serious about their art. If prizes were thrown out there, I think it would bring down the quality of submissions.

I compete here because I feel when my photo scores high or gets a "digital ribbon" that it serves as sort of a self validation that one's work is good and appeals not only to one's self but to the very diverse group of people here at DPChallenge. Prizes are good, don't get me wrong, but the sense of achievement felt here when one wins a ribbon and your peer's acknowledgement sometimes is the best prize in the world. Hang out here awhile and you will see :)

I agree 100%! Competing here has taught me a lot about photography in general, but also a lot about what I like to shoot. That has changed drastically since joining this site.

A lot of the other sites with actual prizes have advertising all over and pop up's, etc. I really like how clean this site is and that they are able to keep all that other stuff out since they aren't getting prizes to be given away.

Thanks D&L for a great place to hang out and learn!!

Edit: I don't generally believe in paying to be part of a web site. This (and Pbase) are the only 2 sites I have ever paid to be a member of. I think DPC has made the $25 very worthwhile!

Biggest prize of them all: bragging rights.

if you want the answer to that, go to challenge history and look at the top 10 entries, look at the bios of the winners, look at their other entries, and look in their portfolios. that will give you the best idea as to who takes the challenges seriously!

I find that competing in the challenges against photographers from all over the world a very fulfilling, rewarding experience.
Over time, you find your images getting better, and if you pay attention to the Masters, and others as well....you learn so much and your skills improve dramatically.
It's all about meeting the standard for me, to do well against some of the fine photographers on this site is validation as to my level of expertise. Others finding enjoyment in an image I've made is really awesome especially. People here are more than willing to help as well.

So you got them? Must have been the wrong address, I've been waiting for those for ages!

I think Jacko said it best. Although I've got a long way to go to get there! I also think the challenges push me to be more creative in how I take the shots. Before I joined almost all the pictures I took were either of family or flowers. Now I am starting to try and see things from different perspectives. The vanishing point challenge is a good example. There were at least dozen or so of railroad tracks as the subject, but the subtle differences in locations and angels made a big difference in the overall picture. It is also a good place to get comments on your photos before submitting to other contests. I guess you could say the challenge is what drew me into the site to begin with but it was the community that made me decide to join as a full member. I've also noticed that some of other contests that do give big prizes expect and entry fee along with your submission.

I value the way challenges on this site provoke thought. On my own, I would never think to try and capture the sense of touch, for example. Even though I don't always have time to take a submission-worthy photo, I enjoy the mental exercise of thinking what I might take and wondering how each new idea might play to the DPC voters. It makes me look at things differently all week. Later, I enjoy seeing some ideas similar to my own captured and entered. I learn a lot from how they pulled it off, especially when I didn't.
