Okay, don't shoot me for cross posting this. I wanted to start my own thread, but I also answered another thread that was asking for pictures from Brazil.
Anyway, I'm in Brazil this week and next. I got a chance to get out and do some sight seeing on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro and these are a few of the pictures that I took. I'm in Recife now and hope to get some great shots from here as well!
By the way, the waterfall picture is kind of unique. It is a panoramic shot ... it is 5 separate pictures, shot horizontally but stacked vertically.
Copacabana Beach
A trolley in the city
An animal in the Tijuca Forest (Anyone know the name???)
Pão de Açucar (Sugarloaf)
Cristo Redentor
Cristo Redentor at night
Copacabana Beach at night
Panorama of Cristo Redentor
Panorama of Pão de Açucar (Sugarloaf)
Panorama of Rio de Janeiro
Panorama of waterfall in Tijuca Forest
The panoramas look much better full size ... especially the waterfall. As 5 stitched images it was effectivelly a 13.75 megapixel image!

I believe that it is a Coati Mundi ( same family as the Racoon ).

Thank you! Ou devo dizer Obrigado?
I speak the language fluently, but I'm terrible with names of animals and foods.

You're welcome.
I never saw any Coati Mundi when I was in Brazil, but I did see quite a few when I visited Costa Rica. Since they are typically nocturnal by nature, it was a pleasant surprise to see them during the daytime. I did learn to speak Coati fluently while in Costa Rica( most of it sounds very similar to the crinklng noise one hears upon opening a fresh bag of potato chips ) but didn't spend enough time in Brazil to master spoken Portugese beyond "Tudo Bem?" I was supposed to return for a week last month, but the timing was bad, what with the Hurricanes and all ( I live in Central Florida ).
I loved the photos that you chose to post from Rio. I would have offered some of mine, but most were taken in the villages along the Rio Negro in northern Brazil, and I didn't think that they would remind a Brazilian Urbanite of "home".

A city dweller doesn't necessarily long for the city. I'll bet you'd miss a quiet beach or the Everglades more than Disney World. ;-) |

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing what you've got. I would like to take more of that type of photo (the one of the trolley was one of my few "attempts") and I need some "inspiration".

It's kinda cool... it's just a side walk, but it is made of colored rocks or tiles (I don't remember which on that particular one). I swear that Brazilians put a lot of work into making things like sidewalks look good!
On Sunday (when that shot was taken) they actually close down the road so that a lot of pedestrians can walk the road or the icewalk. I saw lots of people walking their dogs, running, bicycling, etc. It felt real "homey" in spite of being in a city of some 7 million people.

A sidewalk?! That's enormous! The "track" must be over 100ft wide! I assumed it was an airport. |

How cool, it would take me three days to jog around that.
What a beautiful city. Thanks for sharing the photos. |

Hmmm... I may have crossed conversations. Another person had asked me about the zigzag design (which is the sidewalk in the photo). And I connected your question to the same idea in my mind.
Based on your response, I think what you are looking at isn't the sidewalk, but rather the road that follows the entire beach. Still, as I mentioned, the road is closed off on sundays for pedestrian traffic. You can see cars on the right side, but on the left only pedestrians.

Aha, different photo. We're talking about the large, oval track shape on the right side of "Panoramic View of Rio de Janeiro." |

Great pics, Scalvert!
I live right there, on Copacabana beach, maybe you can even see my building on your pic. :)
I'm not there right now, so your pics give me great "saudade"...
Hope you're enjoying your time!

Thanks for posting! I'd love to go to Rio Preto some day. I've never heard of Novo Airao, where is that?
Tomorrow morning I'm leaving for Porto de Galinhas. From what I've heard, this trip is going to be awesome!!! |

Terra Preta is a native Indian village and Novo Airão is a sizable town along the Rio Negro river not too far from the city of Manaus. The Rio Negro is one of two Rivers ( the other is the Rio Solimoes ) that join to form the Amazon River near Manaus. |
