Just wondering if anyone knows of a better paying Stock Photography website than Can Stock Photo? By better paying I mean pays the best commissions to Stock Photographers themselves Canstocks commisions are as follows.
Member Download
-----------Retail---Return
Small----$1.50---$0.50 (33%)
Medium--$3.00---$1.75 (58%)
Large----$4.50---$3.00 (67%)
Guest Download
-----------Retail---Return
Small----$3.00---$1.00 (33%)
Medium--$4.25---$2.50 (59%)
Large----$6.00---$4.00 (67%)
Compare this with Istock's commission structure which is not that great for Photographers (But it is cheapest for designers to download).
-----------Retail----Return
Small-----$0.50---$0.10(20%)
Medium--$1.00----$0.20(20%)
Large-----$1.50---$0.30(20%)
As you can see the return for photographers is ten times more on Can Stock Photo. Does anyone know of any other Stock Photo sites that pay better than this?
People in othe forums where I have posted have mentioned IstockPro but There is a barrier to entry with Istock Pro that Canstock Photo does not have, you have to have a minimum portfolio of 100 photos available to view online (at 100% of their original resolution), and if they think your portfolio of at least 100 photos is worthy and it is selected then you can become a member.
I dont have a portfolio of 100pics yet *sigh*
By the way My Istock Portfolio can be seen here, and this is my Canstock Photo Portfolio.

The key to making money is to get people to download your pictures. Do you have the same pictures on both sites? Compare the number of downloads on them. It's great to get a higer cut, but a cut of 0 downloads is still 0. You could try alamy. I think you only need to send them 16 pictures to look at to be approved.
Now everyone will come in to tell you not to sell for the price offered on either of those sites. Too bad they can't turn back the clock to pre-istock. It's there, it's successful and it ain't going away. And my answer to them is: Want to make good money. Go out and get yourself some paying clients.
Them's my .2 pennies worth. |

there's also dreamstime.... they're really small still but growing.
the thing with these new royalty free stock sites is the commission is pretty low, but it's a whole different type of stock marketing. i would suggest you start developing a portfolio, in the meantime upload to istock, canstock or wherever, and then when you feel you have over 100 good images, then try istockpro.
you should also try out alamy, as they sell to a whole different market of people than those who buy from sites like istock.
like pcody said, the key is to get downloads. so far i've made more money on istock (where the commissions are obviously way lower) than on the other two... istock has a broader userbase, the others are still growing.

Indeed, key is number of downloads and istockphoto has much more than dreamstime.
I started 5 months ago and uploaded gradually from my portfolio. I only took two specific stock type images, rest was just from what I had already.
dreamstime 66 image now, 20 downloads, 10 USD
istockphoto 108 images, 473 downloads, 92 USD
It is hard to predict which images do well, you will find an 80/20 rule, i.e. 20% of your images count for 80% of your downloads. Typically images with people do well on istockphoto, if you look at the most popular contributors.

I agree with willem. I have photos on canstock, istock, and dreamstime. I have made more from istock than the other two combined, and i have less images on istock as well. Canstockphoto is very new and the sales there are slow. If you look at their top 10 list, the photographers with the most sales have sold less than 20 images. They may become more successful over time, but I'm not so sure. Their prices are higher than the other sites.
I think the volume sales at a lower price is more profitable in the long run. |

The problem is all those library's and limited photographers that sell cheap stock images - like istockphoto and comstock etc etc It is drowning the image business.
one sale on istockpro for example will be equal to 108 images, 473 downloads, 92 USD on willem'w istockphoto account.
I would much prefer to sell less often but with more reward.

Agree, but for all those images not qualifying for istockpro and similar, istockphoto is an easy way to make a few extra bucks. |

didn't qualify, too much noise (Sony F707 long exposures), and didn't try again with other images.

A few - funnily enough I find it's the boring images that sell - although I have yet to upload my 'goodens' ;D
I have a Business in the City collection that gets a lot of hits.
Problem is keeping it up-to-date - until they do a batch upload it'sa pain to get a good number of photos up live

I've put a few images up on istock, it takes days for the images to get approved, and the images that don't, they say have too much noise - which is bs in some cases. The single upload process is very burdensome. But I should put more images up, a few extra bucks never hurts |
