I recently bought myself a Minolta Dimage Z1 camera. After searching around the web it seemed to have good reviews for the most part. Now that I have the camera I would like to start to learn the detailed features of it. The problem is that I am totally new to photography and really know nothing. So I am wondering if any of you have a suggestion of a book that would be a good starting place to learn about photography. Something that focuses more on digital photography and that would include exercises or assignments to explain things would be ideal. More importantly something that not only explains what certain things are (like exposure and aperture) but also shows what their effects are.

Hi :)

I've got the Z1, too. I've had it for less than a year, it's helped me so much, but I already want a better camera!!

The nice thing about it (I don't know about other digis) is that when you play around with the manual settings, it will show you the effects on the lcd. So if you're on M setting and you lower the f-stop (left-right buttons) or shutter speed (up-down buttons) then you can see what happens... and how the settings will effect the picture. TRial and error taught me more than any book could! I have no attention span though :)

Good luck, sorry if I couldn't be of much help...

Bryan Peterson has a new version of "Understanding Exposure" available. It talks alot about aperture and shutter speeds. But the best way to learn is to pick a subject and try the different manual settings. You'll soon begin to see what certain settings do so that you can begin to previsualize a photograph with specific settings in mind. Good luck :-)

You should look for a book called "Understanding Exposure." I don't remember the author (I don't have the book here), but it was very educational to me when I first got started.

The Z1 is a great camera....fantastic zoom! I had a 7i for a couple of years before I upgraded for work purposes.

I have read a lot of books about photography and the best one I've read so far on digital photography is:
Mastering Digital Photography
by David Busch

It's very comprehensive, explains a lot with pics and gives easily understandable information for the novice. I can't recommend it enough. Good luck.
