I was shooting a wedding yesterday and my Canon 40D just stopped working. It would come on, but the lens would not auto focus, the camera wouldn't allow me to make any adjustments with shutter, aperture, etc. while on manuel and it wouldn't take any pictures. Is this because the shutter count was up? I don't think I've taken that many pictures yet. But I guess it's possible. Could it be something else? |

Can you run the options on the back? (reviewing pictures, changing the date, etc)
Also, have you tried not only removing the battery, but removing the backup button battery as well and then putting them back in?
Also, have you tried a different lens?

Yes, I can still review pictures on the back. I did try taking both batteries out and putting them back in and tried a couple different lenses. It didn't make a difference. I did just go turn it on and now it seems to be working normal again. So that is weird! But something caused it to stop working in the first place.
Does anyone know if this is what happens when the shutter count gets too high? |

I've had my camera stop working twice. Once the mirror motor went bad, but there were awful noises that preceded the stopping.
The second time I had a couple of partial images and then it stopped working. But it never started again.
Did you check the images? Were there any problems with the couple of images before the camera stopped working?

Did you check the lens contacts. Sometimes that happens to me when I use an extension tube, and the contacts aren't quite doing what they are supposed to do. |

All the images preceeding turned out fine. And I did check the connection of the lens. Thank God I had a nice back up camera. Could you imagine those photographers out there shooting wedding with one camera and this happening. Scary stuff!
Well thanks for your help. I'm going to take it to a local camera shop and have them look at it.
