I am interested in doing some medium format film photography. I found a used Hasselblad for sale at a local store. It is only $400, including an 80mm 2.8 Zeiss lens. The only concern is at there is a small scratch on the front of the lens glass, about 1/4 inch in length. . The guy in the store said it shouldn't be a problem unless I'm shooting into the sun, in which case i would get some increased lens flare. Is that true? Everything else about the camera is great and the price is great but I'm worried about the scratch. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

Yeah, that's true. If you want to prove it to yourself, tear off a small piece of post-it note and stick it on the front of one of your digital lenses and shoot a picture; you won't even be able to tell it was there. Sometimes you will get flare issues of the light's refracting just so across a scratch, but that's not common.

Thanks Bear. I'll have to see if they have a return policy in case it doesn't work out. I am also going to check out a Yashicamat TLR for half the price of the 'blad, which may be a better choice for a newbie. |

They didn't have the Yashica Mat in stock so I bought the Hasselblad. I just shot a test roll and I'm developing it this afternoon. They have a 14-day return policy, so I'm not worried if something is amiss. |

You'd have been crazy to by the Yashicamat, there's something about Hasselblad that transcends the mundane, it's a mythical camera. Like a Leica. 499 bux isn't too much to pay for a piece of the myth :-) A couple times a year I wake up with an intense longing for my 'blads, which were long ago sold when I sold my business. Ditto my Sinar-P, which is likewise a mythical piece of gear, among the large-format cameras.

It's a Hasselblad. You can't get a standard lens for $400.
Buy it, ebay the lens, and buy a new one at //www.keh.com.
