I got a "Which one? Fair." comment from someone with no camera and no pictures posted or challenges entered. Very vague, kind of sarcastic...wonder if this is all the same guy. Maybe he's having a bad day, or someone peed in his fruit loops this morning. ;o)

gee...I had no sarcastic comments till now (I'm waiting though :) ), but some people can't see how my picture fits the challenge!! As I see it, ALL the photos do meet the challenge this time!! Every one of them, I think this is a break through!! (gheghe)
Well, since I'm on 5,2something right now, I think I don't have so mucht to complain..but who knows, by Thursday.... ouch!

Remember what Jadin says: "It's graded on a curve!!"
Highest posted score is 6.8
Your score (for example) is 4.2
4.2 / 6.8 = 61%
If 6.8 had gotten a perfect 10, 4.2 would equal a 6.1. |

there are two exactly the same pictures in the current desaturation challenge (thought I'd post it here...)..how's that? How should I vote on them???
{edit} this is not something like the 'waiting' winners, but I'm talking about EXACTLY the same..how does one react on these kind of things normally???

I wouldn't care if I scored a 2.1821 just as long that's good enough to get me in the 70-80% group.

Originally posted by Galimages: I feel better now that I have read this thread. My Selective Desat entry received the "what were you thinking?" comments as well... and the comment "If the shot was boring in color, what makes you think it would be better in B&W". HARSH. Very harsh.
I interpretted this challenge as taking a photo and selecting areas to leave in color, the rest to be B&W. I worked many hours learning how to do this skill, having never done this before.. so for that reason.. I thank you all for the opportunity to learn this.. but I guess no one could comment about the amount of work that went into the effort. But... I learned a new skill, and that's OK.
But, more importantly, the other thing that I have "taken away" from dpchallenge is the reminder of how to be a good teacher. If I ridiculed my students the way some of the people here do so, my students certainly would be turned off. I can just imagine it.... "why did you do that? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?" My student would be demoralized and dishearted to learn more. I am reminded that, instead, I would say to the student.. "well, OK.... I see what you were trying to do. How about if you try to do this the next time, and let's try it again".
So... thanks to DPCHALLENGE... for reminding me how to be a nicer human being. |
And I've seen this woman teach and see who she has to work with sometimes, she's an excellent role model! Hang in there Gale!

i agree. the percentage placement is more important than the score. the scores have fluctuated so much over the course of the 3 years i've been on this site that they mean very little. it would be nice to see an average placement % added into the profile page along side the avg. score. |

AT least this challenge will be a good learning experience for us all. Maybe we could have it again in a few months.

I'm giving everyone a 1, just for kicks, I mean everyone else is low balling so I might as well join the band wagon, right?
no matter what I shoot, and it seems others shott, folks are barely making it out of the 4 range. What the heck is going on here.
Screw it! Ones for everyone! Enjoy!

Cool, I am also a proud member of the "what were you thinking?" comments. I really thought I was special to recieve such a comment, but it appears others have equally as sucky....at least in his eyes...photos. :) |

Since I have noticed that many of the people who's work I most admire on this site tend to be generous with their scoring, and the people who leave the nastiest comments tend to score low and post up nothing, I have decided that if you are going to score well on your shots, your average score given must be above a 5. I figure if I can get my average score given up to a 6 then my photography will take a quantum leap. At least I can be genorous on this challenge because I think there are lots of good shots, and besides I don't have a shot in this challenge.

I kind of think there's one specific evil commenter. I noticed this person a bit ago and have been drafting a polite note asking to lay off the harsh stuff and try to be more helpful when commenting, but I'm waiting for this challenge to end to see if my theory is right and gather more evidence...

I spent more time, and did more photos for this competition, and am still scoring low. One person even asked me what was desaturated!! it was pretty obvious as it was right in the front of the photo! -- then I get Comments like "Strong" and "Great" -- but still looking at a 4.75!
I too got a "What were you thinking?" Comment...someone doesn't know..never mind

Sorry for the confusion. I saw others use this abbreviation for the just completed "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" challenge. So, of course, I jumped right on the bandwagon.

My score is much lower than expected. But, I am one of the ones that was confused about the challenge. I desaturated a layer and erased the chosen sections to bring back the original color. Oh well, live and learn. I am happy with my entry and for a change am getting a lot of comments. (good ones even) |

94 votes - 8 comments and a 5.3936. Some people love my shot giving it nines, others hate it..I guess creating emotions about a photo is good, at least people find it interesting to post some very well thought out comments - thank you in advance.

started out with 5.33 and after 89 votes am sitting at 5.0337 with no comments.
I still really like my entry which is an improvement for me, cos usually by now I'm looking at it seeing what I could have done to improve it.......and am pretty happy with the score too! though would be great to get a few comments.
