A friend of mine. This one, particularly, owns no $800 DSLR camera or a fancy $1000 photoshop program, nor has he been to art schools or expensive classes taught by Ansel Adams grandchildren, but he has produced such a work of art:

I've been inspired... and wish to share the inspiration with you. (Unfortunately he posted it on his DeviantArt account... poor soul.)

ummmmm...
I'm missing something.

Is it a "black and white" thing? A train thing?

To be honest, I liked your "water splash" shot better.

What are you talking about? A friend of mine who is an amateur photographer just took this photo with a digital point-and-shoot, that's not at all impressive!? O.o

Honestly? It's flat and soft. Decent composition........but needs some work.

It is a great shot.
Just curious - eqpipment used:

Camera: Canon EOS-500D Rebel T1i
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

This is pretty good stuff if considered 'point & shoot' gear. I'm guessing this was a default listing of what you use? If so, what was used to get the shot?

Get him to join DPC as I think he would do well (at least better than me).

Yes, since you point out the "point-and-shoot" thing, it's more impressive than I originally thought.

On the other hand, have you looked at YOUR portfolio lately??

Look, I've given you some comments lately that may seem like I'm yankin' your chain, but I'm not.

If your info is correct, and you're actually 13, you've got potential skilz, ma shizzle.
8-)

Don't sell yourself short.

See, once you get old(er), like me, you start saying stuff like, "Man, if I would have had some self-confidence in myself and really applied myself to what I wanted to do, I might not just be "workin' for the man".

I see a lot of me in you, when I was your age, and wonder what would have happened if I would have really applied myself and followed my dreams.

You only go around once.

(butt kissing over. Stepping down from soap box)

P.S. - If my tone seemed harsh, it really isn't.

Enjoy the journey, my friend.

Oh. And tell your friend it's a nice shot! (He could do it, too!)

That's the default stuff put into the photos I submit... you know that.

Seriously, what exactly do you think is so special or artistic in that shot? I don't get it.

The range of tonalities, the crispness and detail throughout the complete depth of field, the leading lines that assist your eye to cruise the image from the bottom left corner up through the top in the distance...for starters.

The image could be improved with a slight application of levels or curves, but for an image that is straight out of a point and shoot camera by a young photographer with little or no experience, this is a great shot.

Now, do you get it?

I had to play with it.

Obviously I didn't make clear I asked the OP.
Anyway, the extreme DOF is not unusual for P&S cameras. The tonal range is about what one would expect at this time on a sunny day with one of today's P&S cameras that are optimized for these lighting situations - they make images flat and soft, as already mentioned. I agree with the good leading lines, though. Other than that, I don't see anything remarkable, and the age of the photographer is something I would never consider (how do you know he has little or no experience, BTW?).

I love the original and I do agree that it is a great capture. If anything I would grunge it out
with more noise, and well... like this. The original looks old. Like the feeling of the image.

and Your stuff is great!

The funny thing is, the rest of the image is actually much better as well. Oh, if you could use your powers for good! But alas, all you know is how to burn and pillage!

@ApertureJack-
I appreciate you posting my picture, it means a lot.
@all of you who commented-
I appreciate the constructive criticism, and yes, I am an amateur photographer. I have no "real" experience, except for taking pictures just for the fun of it. This picture was taken (point and shoot) simply because I loved the way it looked to me, and the picture happened to turn out great. I didn't use any fancy camera, so the resolution/quality of the image isn't superb. I enjoyed reading the comments and seeing the edited images on this thread, and I hope to submit more work as wanted.

Thanks again.
