Best I can tell it's been almost 3 years since Photojournalism III. Although the Challenge suggestion search is a bit rough to use. So maybe there has been a IV and we need a V? How about it.

Take your best photojournalism shot. Minimum editing rules. *Special rule you MUST convert to black and white* Only adjustment available no crop, no rotate, resize once, and sharpen once.

I like this challenge suggestion. Would be great to see more photojournalism on the site. Not quite sure why it should be B&W though. Or minimal rules with no crop. What's the reasoning behind this?

Classic journalism is printed in Black and white. I also think a good journalistic shot looks better in Black and white. Would it matter color or black and white to me? No But I like the stronger look of a good black and white. Maybe even force the Black and White to be shot in camera? I don't know. :D

No rotate? Would that mean it would have to be taken in landscape orientation?

95% of our A1 Lead photos are Landscape. Journalism sometimes requires you to not use your best photo, but the best photo that fits the slot in the layout. In this case it's Landscape. :D

Of course, this challenge had to happen the week i'm visiting family in rural Mid Wales where nothing ever happens!! I guess i may be able to capture something worthy of the front page of Farmers Weekly. SHEEP GETS HEAD STUCK IN FENCE.

Never once in my years of being a Photojournalist or a Journalism student was I ever required to stay with strictly out-of-the camera results. IMO, the ME rules set makes this challenge a bit unrealistic. AE would be much more realistic for a real working journalist.

Just sayin'.

I think it's a damn fine restriction. I've had many times I've to shoot an assignment and just send them directly from the shoot to the editor to get them there on time. Or burn a disc in my laptop on the way to the office and hand it to the editor. It happens so I think it's a good restriction.

Ethics really prevent too much beyond basic anyway. Levels, curves, crop. but since it's a CHALLENGE why not add some fun to it.

My first front page photo was from that of a Funeral of a soldier who lost his life in Iraq. The paper we put out is a weekly and his funeral was on the same day we usually get the paper BACK from the printer and we deliver it the next day. They held just the front page I covered the funeral and downloaded my camera in the car on the hwy and burnt a disc as I sat in the newspaper office. Ran in handed a disc to the Managing editor who quickly picked a photo and added it to the page and sent that page to the press. 4 hours later the paper arrived at our doorstep. So it does happen.

In minimal editing you are allowed to rotate your photo, but no cropping.

Where does it say we must convert to Black & White? I'm not seeing it anywhere.
