Hmmm, you could enter a shot in CharlieBaker style...

Oh, and here's one of his that actually fits this challenge!(And it placed less than last place, I'm impressed!)

Or, maybe not.

How would this do? It's not eligible for this challenge though.

Ten photograph panorama of La MalBaie area 400km (250mi) north of Montreal.

Works for me, but my gut feeling is it's too much land/seascape for this challenge.

I disagree with Bear on that. I think it's just right. Everybody has their own view, but I think a picture that's just (or almost just) sky is boring, even if the sky is great. The winners, IMO, are going to find a balance that emphasizes the sky while not failing to neglect the landscape portion. The landscape will anchor and interact with the sky in a pleasing manor.

It will be a fine line and there are bound to be a few people who vote the shot down because it has ANY land in it.

As I said, my *gut* feeling; I'm already on record as saying for me, personally, a decent amount of foreground at work is a good idea and not DNMC. Let me put it this way: give me another layer of sky above what's already there on this shot, so we have 2 inches of sky and one inch of land/sea, basically, and it would be fine with the voters; but it's probably just not enough sky, IMO.

It's not that there's too much "other than sky", it's that there's not enough SKY to make it the main focus.

I wouldn't DNMC it, but it probably wouldn't score that high with me (probably a 5), because my eye keeps wandering to the foreground, not the sky.

I'm agreeing with Bear. I think just a sky alone is not enough (usually, but that's not an absolute) I think most shots will benefit from having something else in the frame. It's just that the sky needs to be the star of the show.

I think I've just been yanko'd.

Well, to be really precise here, your post kinda sorta was a yankoing of me from quite a bit earlier :-)

Have there always been these "great debates" prior to challenges? I don't recall this from my early years. Maybe I just don't recall being as irritated by them as I am now.

Always. The heated debates are half the fun.

What the man said. They've been a fixture as long as I've been here, which is going on 6 years now. Annoying and fun in equal measure...

With that philosophy you might want to change your new Signature ;-)

Actually, it's not a new sig line. I set it up over a year ago and it's never been visible before the other day. Don't know what changed, but all of a sudden it can be seen. Ok, I've fixed it, just for you.
