Hi. I have read quite a few reviews on the Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 USM IS lens. In fact, this lens seems like its quite a high quality lens, especially considering the price.
Am I missing something? Can anyone attest to this lens? I'm thinking of getting it. It will be used on a Canon 20D body. Is there something better, even if it costs a little more?
Basically, I'm looking for a versatile telephoto lens for a decent price. I have a very cheap quantary 70-300.
Thanks ahead for any suggestions.

I have it and originally bought it for the 20D. I use it mainly for sports events (polo) and have been very happy with it. I don't use it that much, mostly because I'm not usually that far from whatever it is I'm taking a picture of, and I can get along with my EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. |

It has a very good rep. I was planning on getting one myself, however Tamron has announced their own equivalent and it is initially being offered for $399 after the mail in rebate hassle. That's what the Canon goes for if you find a good deal on a used one. The Tammy is already available in the Nikon mount, hopefully the Canon version will hot the street inthe next few days. I've been exceptionally pleased with my Tamron 10-24, and I have no hesitation to be an early purchaser of the new zoom.

I have one, it's so-so. I've always wished I'd held out out for the 100-400 f/4L, or even the 400mm f/4L prime. It does depend on your other lenses and what you shoot though (of course). I find I only use it around its long end and then it isn't quite long enough - nor is it quite fast enough.
Having said all that, my only blue and highest scoring shot was taken with that lens - and I don't even think it was taken at the long end!
Generally though, it's not a tool that makes me think I can go out and shoot wildlife, so I mostly shoot other stuff with my other lenses.

Thanks for the info. The 100-400 f4L looks tempting, but the tag is a bit high for the use I'd be putting into it. I shot this:
with my Tamron 28-75 (at 75mm) from a bit of a distance.
As long as the quality of the 70-300 is decent (from what I heard it is very good), it should suffice.
I believe I took this with my cheap Quantaray 70-300. |

I was hesitating to post, but now that someone else broke the L barrier...
I love my 100-400L, great glass, and really a fun lens to work with (I even use it as a walk-around lens)...
Cannot speak to the quality of the 70-300, but I can tell you the 100-400L is a damn nice piece of glass. |

I like my 70-300mm and use it for macro shots too in addition to tele shots. Here are a few. I don't score highly with my shots but not because of the quality of the lens! :-D

i shot this with a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS from waaaaaaay out along the baseline in left field, so i imagine that the lens will do you much better.

I very much enjoy this lens. It's true that at times I wish it were a bit faster, but for me those times have been rare.
I just got back from a 3 week trip in Africa, and used that lens to take over half of my photos. I got so many amazing shots from it, I'm glad I upgraded from the 55-250 IS. Some of my examples with this lens:

Mike, CJ,
Thanks for posting those. They are photos of exactly the type of things I'm looking to photograph! I think I'm sold. :) |

Have you simply looked under "equipment" - "lenses" to see what sorts of photos are being taken with this lens?
I have one and it handles well, is quick to focus and fun to use.
I think the price is very fair.
I've used it on a 40D and now a 5Dmk2

I haven't looked at lenses in awhile but why wouldn't you get one of the the 5 versions of the 70-200L instead. The 70-200 f4 is like 500 bucks . I can't use variable aperature lenses anymore. Skip "IS" and get a monopod or tripod. |

I love mine. It takes really good wildlife shots.
