Several times in the last couple weeks I've noticed the term "general consensus" in forum discussions. By definition, a consensus is general. Cease and desist. That's an order :-)
Back to your regular programming now...

But redundancy is good...
Such as RAS syndrome
Some good ones:
ATM machine (automated teller machine machine)
CSS style sheets (cascading style sheets style sheets)
PIN number (personal identification number number)

I feel sorry for those that are so rigid that they need to use the same spelling each time and are forced into using a structured construct for words in a sentence :-) |

Ara, a good tautology is good now and then.

I hate the use of the term "short circuit" to describe any electrical failure. A short circuit is a specific condition.

I shall ensure that I keep this note in close proximity to my keyboard as an aide memoire reminder. :O)

Do you work in the Dept. of Redundancy Department?
Near where I grew up is the town of Los Altos Hills (Los Altos means "The Hills" in Spanish) so it's The Hills Hills ...
There's also the Piñon Pine (the Pine Pine), which is the source of pine nuts, and the Rio Grande River (the Big River River). |

...or "glitch" to describe all manner of computer problems (including the one between the chair and the keyboard). |

Don't forget "the hoi polloi." (the the many/the the masses). As well it is as often misused as redundicated to mean hoity toity. |

Not upset, just bemused ...
I'm noticing my own unusual irritation with a regular announcement on the radio soliciting feedback on a show, suggesting the listener click on "... the link to the program you wish to comment on." Maybe the recent passing of Edwin Newmann has triggered a heightened sensitivity to these issues. |

Actually, every good web designer knows that it's a CSS file, not a CSS style sheet.
ETA: I do hate improperly used prepositions almost as much as GeneralE does.

I cried in my soup when I heard that you no longer need the last series comma. :(
It rated right up there with demoted pluto and taking indigo out of the rainbow.

Agreed. I always thought that whoever didn't use it was a dumbass. Now it's the proper thing to do?

We've lately lost a bunch of redundant "l"s as well:
Traveller > Traveler
Counsellor > Counselor
etc.... |

I'm not fond of "friggin" either. I prefer "freaking".
A great peeve: snuck. The past tense of to sneak is sneaked. However, somehow "snuck" has become an accepted form of sneak. Instead of saying - I was freaked out - we could now say, I was fruck out. Or: My toilet leaked all night, no? Ah - my toilet luck all night!
Don't get me started on there, their, they're. People who misuse those words should have there heads set straight.

I really hate putting an apostrophe in when they mean more than one.
Really.
One dog
Two dogs
Dog's: means it belongs to a dog.
Dogs': means it belongs to more than one dog.
Simple really... |
