My computer died over the holidays and I bought an open-box computer with Windows XP this morning. I have never had XP before, so everything is a bit different. I'm worried that there may be a prob with the computer and I just wouldn't recognize it because I'm not familiar with XP.
Two things I need help with ---
The full screen on the monitor isn't being used. There is a black frame around the open window. How do I correct this? This is driving me crazy because I know it is correctable and can't do it! Monitor is set at 1024 x 768 and High Color. At what resolution should it be set. Should it be High or True color.
A little side question. There is no icon in the task bar for me to click on the desktop. I have to close or minimize windows to get back to it. How do I get that on the task bar?
Many many thanks.
Marsha

Re: full screen... sounds like your monitor needs to be adjusted. There should be buttons on your monitor somewhere... you will need to adjust the width/height of the display. Doesn't sound like an XP issue.
Re: desktop icon... another way to do this is to right-click on the desktop itself and select Properties. Alternatively, in XP you can right-click on the Start button, select Properties, under the Taskbar tab, select Customize near the "Hide inactive icons"... somewhere there you can have the desktop icin show up in your task tray.
Of course there is the Help and Support option under the Start button. The help files are pretty big. And Microsoft's online support can help too.

right click on your taskbar, go up to "toolbars" and select quicklaunch.
if you need to make adjustments to what is in there, it's in this directory: C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch where %USERNAME% is whatever you signed on with originally. 4 items fit perfectly, when the taskbar is locked. if you need to unlock the taskbar to move around toolbars (such as the quicklaunch one) right click and select "lock taskbar" (removes check)
about the monitor: you want to go to windows update and make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card, first. the display sizes etc should be able to be changed on the actual monitor itself, via buttons or menus or whatever. it differs between makes, so i can't help you much.

I know Marsha started this thread but I was having the same question about the task bar and couldn't find the answers in the online help. Thanks for the help, and Marsha, thanks for asking the questions in the first place. |
