I've been thinking about hiring some part-time help with editing and I don't know what to pay. Do you pay an hourly rate or do you pay a flat rate?
Also, I'm trying to figure out if I should just have him work on the photos directly from the hard drive, on a network or do any of you guys work off of a server? |

I was an assistant for a photographer and worked on all of her post production. I was paid hourly, but a flat rate fee isn't necessarily a bad thing. Pay based on their experience and where you are located. If your near Atlanta, NYC, or a big city I think you should definitely pay in 10s if not 20s (based then on the assistants experience or their skill level... make them do a timed test to show you how quickly they work and if they can do what you need). You could always start off with a (PAID) internship with someone and see if they'll fit with your style of editing and then hire them part time. That way you have a testing phase and you can also teach them how you edit in your style.
I always worked out of the photographers home. You really don't know what people might do with your photographs if you give them copies to take home, or work over a network. If you totally trust them then go ahead. It took almost 2 years of working with my photographer on her computer at her house everyday, before she let me take them home and work on them. When I worked for her she used Fetch a lot to share photos through a server to the food stylist, creative director, and web editor. Just make sure your assistant knows how to do use a sever or has the software.... if not maybe offer to pay for it as a yearly bonus or something.
