Is it considered rude to correct glaring spelling errors on cover letters and send them back to the applicants? It would be doing them a favour, right?
And these are graduates of the fancy-pants universities. How did these kids even get accepted?
Sheesh !
ETA, don't these kids even use spell check? "learnt" isn't a word, is it?
"I quickly learnt the importance of effective communication, and the value of developing strong relationships."
What an ironic sentence. :-D

That explains the use of the term "fancy-pants".

I just saw a cube truck in Burlington with these gigantic words painted on it: "GI-OCEAN: IMPORTATORS OF FISH" |

I see you are also quite capable of having a conversation with yourself. That's not a skill learnt in a fancy pants university.
BTW, the Firefox spellchecker underlined learnt as a misspelled word.

It's a "Britishism", the Queen's English. I'm surprised, you being a Canadian, that you didn't know that. You being a putative subject of the Queen and all...

I'm a transplant from the USA. After high school I moved north for university. ;-) My wife (born Canadian) has always said "learnt" and I've always corrected her... oops! Well, she's always ignored me anyway.

Maybe an overuse of e-mail style abbreviations and such? |

It's more likely a direct result of the mush-minded liberal thinking prevalent in our school systems, typified by the asinine "No Child Left Behind" act and Obama's "Race to the Top" silliness. We have a bunch of delusional morons in charge of deciding how and what our children are taught.

umm... no child left behind was a republican stupidity passed during Bush's presidency. And why are we responding to old threads renewed by a user registered today and only looking at old rants? Seems silly.

NCLB was originally proposed by the Bush administration, and it was co-authored and pushed through the Senate by Ted Kennedy. It's just another version of Johnson's Elementary and Secondary Education Act and Clinton's Improving America's Schools Act.

Guess I learned something too, but I don't like it. Another Yank in Canada; I thought I had learnt all the Canadian spellings when all my freshman papers came back with red marks.
More alarming than errant spelling is dressed up non-content. I do not bleeve appalling-speak is exclusive to any part of the political spectrum. Recently the newly and ill-advisedly privatized BC Ferries announced a public meeting which made for wonderful dramatic reading out loud. And while my victims did laugh, perhaps out of politeness and respect for their elders, hardly anyone was so appalled as I was. I was told that there were courses that taught you to speak and write like that.
Prolly not a coincidence that in both fancy and baggy pants universities they are still arguing about the existence of truth and meaning.
So. Be appalled. Be very appalled. |
