I do not think my photos retain exif info once I save them for upload... I was going to enter a challenge but you have to have exif intact correct?

The JPG you upload doesn't need EXIF. Your original should have it though (and it will if you haven't tampered with it).

OK so I just check my original for the exif to fill in the info then... I am used to exif having to be intact for contest/challenges

Thanks for the input

not sure why my saves are losing exif

What program are you using to edit your photos. Some have a selection to keep the exif data in the image, or delete it.

For entries, I delete the exif data, because it leave a little more room in the 300K size limit for image data. Always keep an unedited original of your image, for validation. I shoot RAW, so the raw file is always my original if needed. The site will not accept a raw file for an entry, but will accept it for validation.

When you "save for web and devices" in photoshop, it strips the EXIF to save space. Perfect for us, we can specify the desired filesize (300kb) and then PS will give us the highest possible quality within that parameter.

As far as filling in the actual data you used for shooting (f/stop, shutter speed, iso) on the entry form, that stuff is not required to have a valid entry. It IS nice to fill it in soothers can see it, of course, but it is not mandatory.

Try this instead.

File | Export... | JPG Optimizer

Adjust the slider as close to 1 as possible while staying within the 300KB file size limitation for challenges.

There's a checkbox that says "Save EXIF data" on the first tab. Check it to retain EXIF.

Paint Shop Pro has a selection to keep or delete the exif data. It occurs during the save process. However, I believe if you save to PSP native format the exif data goes away no matter what. I think it only saves it if you stay Jpeg the whole way. Which means that you either have to do everything in one session, or risk a buildup of artifacts in your image, as Jpeg recompresses with each open and save.

Thank you very much! Haven't shot in 8 months and am just now restarting and some of the info did not stay in my head!

If you are entering in the challenge an image made 8 months ago, you need to be aware that's not "legal"; there's a 1-weel window after announcement of the challenge in which you may take an image for that challenge; nothing made before the challenge was announced may be entered. Or maybe I'm reading you wrong...

Make sure you check your date and time on your camera, to ensure that they're set correctly!

Also, one of the most common reasons for being disqualified is for not having a valid original. Make sure you keep a copy of the original file -- before you ever touch the file. (don't open it in anything, don't do a Save As, etc. Copy the file directly onto your hard drive and then work off another copy.)

I think he meant the part about how to save his photo without losing the exif data not that he is submitting a shot from 8 months ago. That is how I read it. It is a bit vague though probably good to clarify.

The .pspimage format does retain EXIF data. I always save my in-work files in that format and I always still have my EXIF info after reopening and finishing.
