I have a 40" Sony TV and I want to hook my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop to it so I can view stuff like Kelby Training on it. My laptop has a VGA out on it. Will the VGA cable also be used for the sound or do I need to buy a separate cable for sound. If so what is the name of that cable????

Typically a laptop has a 1/8th inch stereo plug for headphones. Get a 1/8th inch stereo to dual RCA cable. Make sure you have the volume on the laptop turned down when you plug it into the TV.

no vga will not carry sound.

you need an hdmi port on you laptop in order to carry sound, also note that if you have a dvi port, an hdmi to dvi will also not work, those ports are video only as well.

if you dont have hdmi, your only options are to find an external sound card that will connect via usb or use a headphone jack, but be warned with using the headphone jack, especially a cheap one, you may experience interference.

@kawesttex - I will give your idea a try. It sure would be nice to kick-back and watch some of Kelby Training on my big TV....:)

Thanks!

Also, they make VGA cables with a "built in" audio cable. Basically it's just a male-to-male audio cable that gets wrapped in the sheath. Useful if you need a clean looking solution. I know Amazon carries these in a bunch of different lengths, but be sure to read the reviews on them before buying since there are some pretty cheap (read: crappy) cables out there.

It's really nice having the laptop hooked to the TV. We have a 25 foot HDMI cable in our living room, which allows us to watch Hulu and any other streaming video on the 40 inch TV, while controlling it from a the laptop a comfortable distance away. :D
