Hey Forum,

I have been loitering around this website for about a year but just participated in my first challenge....we'll see how that works out. I am looking forward to seeing how the challenge ends and the feedback that I get. I am also looking forward to the future challenges that I am going to participate in.

I do however have one question. On my personal website I put an X over the image with Copyright written in it to prevent my images being taken. I saw that that was against the rules so I refrained. I know that the images on this website can be Copy/Pasted very easily, so what do you all think about the protection of your photos?

Thanks, and I look forward to many happy challenges to come. DChap

welcome, and if i understand what you are asking, there is a setting in your preferences that will add a watermark to all your images automatically

Welcome Dchap! Watermarking is about the only think you can do that will make an image undesirable to download.

But don't focus on that. Just have fun with the challenges and don't fixate on the score. As for the comments, they're just another person's opinion, that's all. And it's really nice to get them, so do your fair share :-)

I do have a question....

when you submit a photo to a challenge, it let's you request a "indepth critique". I know what a critique is, but who does it, why is it "indepth", is it free, worth it....etc?

thats just there for looks, you never really get a critique....kinda like a belly button, no longer serves any purpose...

LOL! I've requested at least 7 critiques. They don't even have to be in depth. Nada. I think it's like that button you press for crosswalks. Just a placebo.

That's the Critique Club. I don't know if they're still active. Used to be if you checked it, you had a 50/50 shot of getting an in-depth critique. For example.

Anyway, it's just other members of the site that do it as a public service. For that matter it's free. Seems they were more responsive to newer members, so check the box and see what happens.

You can get a lot of feedback, and cover a lot of different shooting and subjects territory if you get in some of the side challenges. If you comment on the photographs posted in them, you will be learning what you like or see in the photographs of the other members, which will help you sort out your own shooing style.
Good luck in the challenge, and welcome to being active here at DPC. Have you found the "Update" button yet?

Critique Club members are assigned photos randomly, from a pool of that week's challenge entries with the box checked. Once the challenge results drop off the front page, photos from that challenge are also removed from the pool, so not everyone who requests a critique will get one.

They are not "professional" evaluations, but are more in-depth than the usual "great shot" or "love the lighting" type of comments usually received during the voting period.

The best way to find out what they are like is to join the Critique Club and help clear up the backlog. Most people agree that you will learn more about photography and what "works" and what doesn't (for you) by analyzing and commenting on other photos than from the comments that other people make on your own pictures.

Best way to get critique is to ask it of the members in a thread you create in "Individual Photograph Discussion" post challenge. People love to give pointers and criticism. Reciprocating helps your own skills, as well.
