Old still life paintings often had "hidden" meanings in the subject matter. A bowl of fruit wasn't just a bowl of fruit, kinda thing. Still lifes were studies in shape, form, light, texture, etc, but the part that made them interesting to someone other than the artist was the message.
Making something look pretty is much easier than conveying a specific message. The focus of this challenge should be the message, not necessarily the beauty, the technical skill, or other factors (though we all know that those things also usually score best here).
Still, don't just stick a pretty flower in a pretty vase and light it with pretty light. Give us a little substance!
Create a still life using items that will convey a very specific message to the audience. Spend time researching and organizing your subjects. |

Excellent topic. I made an attempt at this during last Summer's still life challenge...the light was intended to evoke the soothing and intoxicating sound of these bowls.

Great challenge suggestion. I attempted some sort of post-apocalyptic narrative with this...
(although i wouldn't have liked it to be interpreted as some political environmental message i guess it could have been.) |

Don't think I've ever done a still life, I like the symbolic twist, good suggestion count me in. |

funny, I was just working on a still life yesterday... just practicing mainly! Would love this, but hope if it is a challenge it happens before my trip to Portugal Thursday! |

After seeing this picture, I say that you raised the expectations to astonishing heights if there is going to be a symbolic still life challenge in the near future!
This is a miraculous little image. I was about to add it quickly to my favorites but I go for a shortcut and add the photographer instead.
I posted the message to the picture also, as it deserves to be seen. |

Since this photographer is part of my favorites, I have to say that this image is the photo counter point to a Chardin little painting with brass bowls. Sheer perfection. |

One episode of the horticulturally-based mystery series Rosemary & Thyme involved decoding a message planted in the "language of flowers" -- like nautical signal flags, various flowers form code words, and can be arranged to form secret messages. |
