5.39, which is not too far from my overall challenges average. I'm ok with it because I didn't spend a lot of time and effort to get the shot and process it.

Every time I look, the score is lower. Either the voters are idiots or my picture just plain sucks.

Not mad at all. Just wish you and your buddies would spread your "good will" around to others. |

We all get our fair share of that good will.

I don't know what's going on around here with the wildly fluctuating scores and all but this just isn't fun any more. Maybe people would be more fair if they turn off the whole score thing completely and we'd all just be surprised at the end. |

You have rated 137 of 137 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.7737.
I don't know much.. but I didn't see many pictures that seem un-minimal. I just saw lots of great photographs! Will go back later to comment. |

Karen, I think that's the problem with a lot of challenges. Interpretation of the challenge descriptions are going to be individual and therefore, judging/voting scores and comments are going to be equally individual, according to one's own personal perception of what minimalist landscape shots constitute. By general definition, a minimal landscape can be one that is wholely landscape but, without people or clutter or it can be more sky/sea etc.. My definition may differ from yours and others' definitions differ from both of ours. Even entering one of the pre-challenge discussion threads may help within a certain group of participants but, not everyone will look into those threads so, voting will still be what it is, based on individual perceptions of minimal landscape.
I guess for instance, one could have described the Honey challenge as "take a picture of honey in some way". There would still be people who would figure that it had to be a picture of honey, itself and anyone who took a shot of a bottle/jar/tub of honey, would be considered outside of the challenge topic.
My personal take on this, the photo itself has any resemblance to the topic of the challenge and I like the photo for whatever the reason, it gets the higher scores. I think a lot of people become too rigid and have concepts of what they "expect" to see, according to what they, themselves may have entered or defined it as, personally. It isn't just this challenge but, an issue that runs through almost every challenge that's ever been in DPC. Sadly, a lot of very wonderful photos get lost to bottom ranks in this type of definition battle. :(
(That's why I've given up trying to please or get a ribbon now and just photograph and edit to my liking and accept that it's likely going to be hit or miss with people. At least, I have had fun doing it. Though.....I will admit that I'd LOVE to have a ribbon on my profile one day! LOL :)) |

I was one of those hit with a DNMC from KarenNfld, and I would say rightfully so. It was the only shot I had, however, so I thought I'd try it anyway. In the recent "Visual Puns" challenge, I found almost that almost all of them were DNMC, and were actually Literalisms...which already had its own challenge. I figured that if I submitted a decent landscape, minimal or not, I might at least get in the 5.5 range. No dice. Currently hanging on to 5.0 for dear life. |

I say it was wildly fluctuating because it bounced around all morning, but this is the lowest it's been and that's the highest I saw it.
The same thing happened for the first two days in the 100 meter challenge.
What kind of fun is this?
I know I'm committing a death sentence by even posting in this thread but seriously, I think people are playing around with the voting and it's not fair.
Is this happening to anybody else or is it just me? |

I was at 5.5 this morning, now at 4.8. Not minimal enough I guess. |

It's not that my score is so low that bothers me... I just can't believe that half the people that voted so far had totally different opinions than the other half.
I mean... it's certainly possible, but the probability of this happening to me twice in a week? That's what make me think it's not just the picture I posted. |

I think that most voters have no clue as what they're voting on. Then the discussion on what minimalism is might have changed some opinions. |

I don't think that anyone's playing with the numbers, I think that we're used to trolls coming first. We've had some really generous voters in the early stages, recently. We like it when our scores rise after the trolls, but it's so much harder when our hopes are raised early.

Not related to fairness, but I might check my score once during the week. I find it's much more enjoyable to not follow the ups and downs. It's a recipe for frustration. |

No matter what anyone else says, it's not just you. I think this happens to most of us, and happens to me every time. That's one of the reasons I don't enter that much anymore. It has to be a photo that appeals to the majority. Even if you take a photo that meets challenge rules and is very good, it doesn't mean it will do well.

It used to be fun! And now I'm addicted. That's my problem and I realize that.
But I'm confused about why things are different recently. And I really believe they are. |

Some people find it harded than others to give a high vote when they themselves are in the same challenge. It's even worse when their photo is doing well and they go back and start lowering their votes in hopes of getting a ribbon. it's a shame, but it happens. i have watched my score fluctuate here and ther through the week, and on the last day or two, it plummets. That's the only thing I can figure happening. It would be nice to not be able to vote in a challenge you enter to prevent this, but then, how many people would vote??? Catch 22. I could understand more if you win money, but a digital ribbon? I guess some ego's need their fill. Don't let it get to you. It gets easier to deal with over time, and you kind of distance yourself after a while. Then you start entering challenges that you think are interesting, not every one you can fit in.
