Good grief, they make the 50-year-olds stick it out until "last!"
That's one way to winnow out the old folks.

(no joke here, I've had people go through their phone to find their number) |
I still know my numbers...my whole family calls me for phone numbers...lol |

When I was in high school, we used the Slide Rule for our math and chemistry classes. Seriously. |

Actually the winners were married over 50 years and in their 70's and 80's, we were 3rd only being married 35 years, got beat by my inlaws and another couple who had been married almost 60 years, they were still cutting a pretty good rug (for you youngsters that's a term for dancing.) |

Not only did they have cigarette lighters, but there were no seat belts, air bags, some only had AM radio..unless you were lucky to have the fancy radio that had AM and FM. If you were REALLY lucky you had an 8-track player as well. LOL.
Oh, let's not forget that if you had an automatic transmission it wasn't down on the center console, but on the steering wheel, AND remember turning on the high beams with the button on the floor board with your foot. None of that was where it is now. |

You know you're getting old when the 'getting old points' raised by Ja-9 make it sound like she could be one of your kids.
Or when you relate to your granddaughters (as I did the other day) reminiscences of watching TV for the first time - a sneaked peek through the hinge-crack of the door of the local farmer's where my friend and I walked every Saturday to get our week's supply of eggs. (I was 7 and it was 10 years before we got one.)
Or when you can remember collecting wood chips for a bath (once a week, Saturday night, coz we had to be clean for church next morning).
Hiding in a closet all Sunday afternoon coz I giggled in church and I was going to cop a strapping.
Knowing that if ANY adult had a problem with my behavior their version of events would carry the weight, and I would cop a strapping.
But, it wasn't all bad and not all change is progress. I often feel that my grandkids are deprived. They can't make their own fun like we used to. They aren't free to roam ('just be home before dark') as we were, and they don't have the same incentive to be creative as we had. They also get so much stuff that they value nothing, and that's a little bit sad.

You make a joke in a meeting about Frank Burns, and virtually everyone thinks he is the character from the Simpsons.
(true story).

When you go to enroll a student in the Adult Education program you teach in, only to discover that you taught his/her mother/father when they were in school. :/ |

Yeah, the ONLY Frank Burns I know of is the numbskull...Major Frank Burns from M*A*S*H. That makes me old enough so I'm hoping I'm not forgetting another one. LOL.

The first car I owned had a starter button separate from the ignition on/off switch, and when the starter motor stopped working I could still start it with the crank ... |

First "car" I drove (and learned on) had no syncro.... I'm now old enough to think everyone should learn like that.... as people would be better drivers (or they would have had their gear change arms ripped off and not be driving any more :-) ). |

When I learned to drive, before synchronizers, an understanding of "double clutch" was essential to avoid "grinding the gears". |

Well, while we're on this subject, how old does the fact that Sebastien Vettel was born in the same year that (insert 1987 film of your choice here, eg: Lethal Weapon, Predator, Raising Arizona, Robocop, Beverly Hills Cop II, Withnail & I...) was released make you feel? |

If my grandfather was still here, he would tell you that to get his first driver's license... he had to swear on a bible he could drive.
The car? A White Steamer. A steam powered bus he drove people to the train station and back to town with. I think he traded a team of two horses for it... Thems was the days! |
