Many people questioned whether or not I used 'basic' editing on my chocolate entry:

I did use 'basic' editing, but the image was disqualified cause I was stupid enough not to check if the date was set on my camera, and naturally it wasn't!

I thought I would clear it up for everyone who thought I cheated, that I didn't, I just had to be very clever in post-processing!

Bummer! I had that image pegged for a ribbon for sure.

That really sucks, this happens too often with images that are really great.... this was my favorite picture too. Do you think you would consider doing a tutorial or explaining a bit how you achieved that awesome effect.

The date burglar strikes again!

Thats too bad. Looks like you got robbed of a ribbon.

That's too bad about the DQ. To be honest, I wasn't crazy about the shot anyways. Kinda reminded me of those corny '80's posters with that Rob Palmer-esque quality to it. Probably would've scored it a 4. Just my opinion though ; )

4!?
I definitely had this pegged as a top 10. I loved it and gave it a 9.
Sorry to hear about the DQ.

I like the quality of the photography and the effect you gave it. However, I was a little disturbed by how much trouble she was having eating a chocolate bar. ;)

Sorry about the DQ. That stinks. I got foiled by my settings one time too, but noticed it before I entered and had time to do another shot.

Hey Spanish Grease, I thought your image was really cool and if I remember correctly I scored it a 9. I also submitted a DQ request on it; Not because I thought you cheated - far from it. I just thought I'd get the validation process started before your image suffered from low voting because of folks thinking the basic editing rules weren't followed.

Anyway, sorry it got DQ'd and I'd like to know how this shot was accomplished as well. Better luck next time :-)

I probably gave it a 4 as well. Just totally not my style. To each their own.

Not my favorite either, I think I had it as a 5 for meeting the challenge (chocolate in it). I just had issues with the whole Young women (lipstick) not being able to get a piece of chocolate in her mouth. The whole destat thing didn't actually took more away from the shot for me as well.

Just my thoughts...

Edit: (I do need to learn how to do this kind of "Basic" editing as it would seem to have it's advantages in "Basic Challenges")

Sorry, I do not understand your voting, if You give a 4 or a 5 to this picture, which pictures in this challenge get more than a 6? I gave a 9 to this and I only had 5 pictures with more than a 6.

Don't misunderstand me, just I am curious for my next entries...

We all vote down images because of different reasons. But in my opinion, 'Not My Style' shouldn't be one of them. It's not like someone is asking you to buy it.

I give a handful of 9's and 10's, as well as a bunch of 6-8's on every challenge. This shot is just not one of them. Not really much to understand about the voting, other than the effect and style of this particular shot does not appeal to some voters.

"not my style" if off course a reason to vote down. This image wasn't really my style either, but I would have scored it a 7 because it fits the challenge perfectly and is technically a perfect picture. But FOR ME it doesn't have the wow-factor to give it 8, 9 or 10. Voting is for a big part a gut-feeling and a matter of taste. Appeal also is part of the quality of a picture.

Thanks for the comments folks. I understand why people would give this a lower vote. It doesn't adhere to many photography 'rules', so many more linear photographers won't appreciate it, which is how it works with most of my photography. I respect whichever vote you gave it, especially if you give me some feedback as too how I could change it (bar changing the entire composition).

P.S. I don't know if I will make a tutorial on this, it is not a complicated process, and a majority of users on the site will know how to do this (unless I'm incorrect of course, in which case tell me).
07/23/2004 12:28:34 PM · #16
My bad, I only gave three 4's this challenge, it probably received a 5 or 6. The only ones to go below 5 are one's that don't meet the challenge. My voting "style" is reward what I like, but don't punish what I don't. So it would've fallen in with all the average votes for me.

I did say "probably", since I honestly don't remember what vote I gave this shot.

All My Goodness. This Was A Good Photo. I Gave You A 10. Sorry About What Happen. Better Luck Next Time:(

Spanish Grease, Please do tell.......

I didn't see this in the voting but would also have given it a low score... Probably a 4. To me this is too digital art and not enough photography left...
07/23/2004 01:24:53 PM · #20
I loved the way you produced the photo. I did not particularly like the chocolate around the mouth. Would have preferred a crisp clean mouth, I actually gave it a 6 but just for personal taste.
07/23/2004 01:28:08 PM · #21
Since no one else has mentioned the border, I gave this a very high score - did not deduct for the border - but "scolded" Spanish Grease for the border. I personally think it detracts from an otherwise nice presentation.

Wow, so many low scores for a decent shot that meets the challenge. You guys are pretty harsh, I hate to see a not so good shot that meets the challenge when it comes to you guys voting, sounds like a bunch of 1's. "I don't like your shot even though its good, so I give you a 4", "Great shot but I don't like it, 4" "Good idea, meets the challenge, well executed...however not my personal taste, 4" That is basically what all this is sounding like to me. It is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. But hey who am I, just someone who like to photograph even though I am not that good at it.

I guess it could be seen as "digital art", but honestly, this high-key technique has been captured purely on film for years with no digital aspect whatsoever.

Everyone has a right to vote as they see fit, but "no lower than 5"? 5 to me is "average" and the bulk of my votes hover around 5. Some that wow me get higher, even if technically not perfect. Some get higher for being technically great even if they don't wow me... and vice-versa.

Complete failure to meet challenge, but technically perfect? 3-4...

I think this is a good even grading scale. Even if I don't like the theme or feel of a photo personally but shows creativity, is technically superb and meets the challenge, it will get a high score because it meets the requirements set out for such a competition.

I think giveing it 4 is strange...
This is how I do my voteing - I'm not sure how accuratly I vote by these rules but I always keep it in mind.

1 dose not meet challenge
2 meets challenge but is horrible
3 meets challenge but has many factors bad
4 meets challenge but has few factors bad
5 meets challenge but could be better
6 meets challenge and is better than average
7 meets challenge and is good
8 very good
9 wow
10 OMG!

I would give you no less than 6
