Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS

So I finally got my first external flash (Canon 430EXII) for my canon 40D. I haven't had any difficulties using it when it's mounted, but I have a (maybe stupid) question about using it as a slave. I was under the impression that you could wirelessly sync it with the camera. My main question is: Can the built-in in my 40D flash act as a master to the speedlite and if so how do I sync them? I also read that the speedlite can only be used as a slave so if I get other external flashes in the future, will I have to get something other than the 430EXII to act as the master?

I believe that is on the 7D and maybe some of the newer rebels - not sure about them. Not on the 40D.

Edit: If you had a 580/550 on the camera or the ste2 they can act as master to the 430.

is there a way to connect them via wire? I don't see a port I could use though :/

Yes, but only on manual. The wired connection would only serve to trigger the flashes to go off, there would be no E-TTL. Your camera should have a p/c connection on it then you need a p/c cable to a shoe for your remote flash

What Robs said. I'll just add that you can also use third party triggers such as the Pocket Wizards, Radio Poppers etc. The radio triggers are better in general for outdoors because the Sun can interfere with the optical triggers from the 7D and STE2. I predominately trigger my 580EX II with my 7D indoors and haven't had any problems. In fact it works great. You can also find some lower cost triggers online that may not provide full E-TTL functionality, but work well in manual. In addition many users find low cost triggers on Ebay.

I believe in addition to the 7D having the built in trigger, the 60D and 600D do as well. Look up the specs to be sure though because I'm not 100 percent positive. The higher end Canon line such as the 5D and 1D series don't normally have a built in flash so an external solution would also be necessary. I haven't read the full specs of the pending 1D X yet so check that out as well. They packed some new features into that camera so look to see if that can trigger.

That will move the external flash off camera, but I don't think it will let you fire the external flash AND the built in flash at the same time.
