Just got my pocket bouncer today from B&H, so I thought I'd do a test along with a 420EX and Omni Bounce. Not very scientific I'm afraid, but maybe they're of some interest..

Bad news is my on-flash softbox hasn't arrived. :-( |

Wow, is the omni-bounce head-on still really that directional? It seems hardly diffused to me at all. I was thinking about getting this attachment for my 550ex for straight on flash work, but that is looking a little too subtle of an effect for me.
Thanks for the comparo.

I've mentioned them before, but here's a couple of good (video) lighting tutorials. They're about general lighting, not sports..
Fire Drill: The Five-Minute Portrait, by Joey Terrill
Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau 2002: Lighting with Robert Seale
Edit: Brad, the reason I mention those tutorials is because they say the point that the size of the light source is very important. So sticking an omni-bounce on a flash and pointing it directly at the subject makes little difference because the source is the same size. Bouncing it off the ceiling, however, it becomes effectively much larger.

Thanks for the comparison Paul. Bledford is right there isn't really much difference in result. I also bought myself the omni bounce for my 550EX and the results were similar. No big difference at all so I never use it at all.
If you look at your results on the 90 degrees up, you'll even see shadows on the background using the omni bounce, which are not there when you used the bare flash. Strange huh? |

I use the Omnibounce all the time. It makes for excellent catchlight in the eyes when bouncing the light off the ceiling.

I was thinking the reason may be because it was fairly dark, hence the flash power was pushed up to near maximum, but the Sto-fen took out too much light to bounce well?
I may do more tests shortly.. |
