It'll takes me...
130yrs to archive the experiences of Votes Cast: 90,000
and 300yrs for Votes Cast: 200,000
only by then I know what warrants a "1"

The whole point of voting is that you don't know what the total score is when you are voting. It doesn't matter how it finishes.

Welcome to DPC Gaby. Many images get the odd 1 or 2 in voting, and as mentioned above the reasons are many and unfathomable. When I see snapshots from non DPC acquaintances, THEN I can often see where the 1s belong. By comparison it'd usually be pretty hard to justify dishing them out here.

OK, I need to reply to that :-). I think I am on the (very?) generous side with my scores at present. As I said, I am learning and I am "feeling" my way along. I *do* try to be technically critical, but being new, I am sure I don't always see the problems with a picture that experienced people see (for example what was and was not done in post editing and how much was "too much"). I don't "throw away" 10s, no, but if I feel it meets the challenge title (a biggy for me personally), I feel it is technically " very good" within what *I* know (and admitedly, that is a big stumbling block :-)), I feel the composure is good and it "speak to me" somehow (and that can be even negatively - there was an image I didn't like, but I kept thinking of it ...), then I give 10s. I don't hand them out by the dozen :-), but if I feel there is *nothing* negative I can say, nothing *I* think would have improved that image, then how can I *not* give a 10?
That is just me :-) - feel free to call me one of "those" voters ;-) (and no, I don't breed, you can't even clone me ..). |

There is nothing to be ashamed of for giving 10's. I do give them by the dozens. It's my favorite number! Why not reward those who worked to acheive what they're presenting to you as their "best" shot for the challenge? And it feels great to to give a 10. Almost as good as it feels to get a 10. If you're a high voter, don't hide it, flaunt it! ;D |

I am not saying there's anything at all wrong about you (or anyone) giving a 10 to any photo you think falls at the extreme "good" end of the scale -- I was more pointing out that virtually all the complaints about voting only mention the "outliers" at one end of the voting scale, not both. By all means, give out 10s to whatever pictures you think deserve it.
Really, there are only two things I think are important about how people vote:
-vote all photos fairly, using the same criteria for each.
-vote on either all the photos or one the ones which are presented to you in order when you start -- don't go back to the challenge thumbnails page and "cherry-pick" certain pictures.
The first is a site requirement, the second "only" a strong recommendation ... |

Talking about "1"... I just got one!!!
This is being my best average score so far
I got 94 votes with an average of 7,0213, and really great comments
Now I have 95 votes and an average of 6,9579, and the same comments
The means somebody voted me with a "1"
Of course he didn't explain why
I fully agree with o2bskating, it should be mandatory to comment for ratings below 4 !!! |

+1 If it is that bad, I want to know why! There can be a script written that identifies the vote and requires a comment to be left; that would eliminate the generic "good shot" comments with a crappy vote. Why the anonymity? Place your 1,2,3's with honor. |

We've tried something like that -- it didn't/won't help.
Perhaps if all of you who want comments explaining low votes can just start commenting on photos to which you give low(er) votes and start a trend.
One historic problem has been that when people DO give a comment on a photo to which they give a low vote, they will sometimes get an argument instead of appreciation from the photographer ... think for a moment how you'd respond to a truly negative comment about your picture -- one the commenter thought deserved a 1 ... I'm guessing that "Gee, thanks! (Really!)" would not be most people's first reaction ... |

The only way it would work is if it was like photoSIG.com where you have to comment for your rating to take effect. That's a critique site though, so the purpose and tone of the site is totally different than here.

... and what would we gain from that.
I have no problems with telling anyone why I might have meted out a 1 score, but would expect the recipient to be tolerant enough to at the very least listen to my viewpoint and not fly off the handle as some are apt to do.
If people truly want to know one of the primary reasons why comments are down, they might consider that sometimes recipients are blinded by their own perception of the merits of their image and have no appreciation that the score they received was warranted.

I have 2 things to add about 1's (and may god have mercy on my soul)-
A) I gave this technically-beautiful and color-amazing image 1 -

Why? I wrote it also in the comment, that it's very hard to me to see the fur as something that suppose to be beautiful. Yes, he is a talented photographer, no doubt about it (I've visited his site and he definitely know his work! go take a look).
But in my world, seeing fur as something that suppose to represent beauty just made me feel bad.
So sometimes, 1 is not about the technical details of photography, it's for the message of the photo.
B) I see the 1 to 10 as a relativity instrument given in order to express my oppinion.
It may be that I'll give very low scores to pictures not because I hate them. I'll give it to them in order to improve the relative positions of the images I like more.
I think that if I only give 10's to the picture that I like most, the vote will blur into the statistic. Now don't get me wrong! it's not that I'm the giving 1's-3's on a regular basis. It's just that I'm not filling bad about giving a 1 to someone if I think that the distance between his photo and the photo I like most is 9.

I never thought of that factor - In fact I hardly noticed the hat!
Good for you to explain the reasoning behind your vote. I used to leave comments on low votes but had so much abuse from people via pm that I don't bother these days.
