Hi there,
There was my digital life before I bought my Canon T3 DSLR. Then there is the life after. I never liked to take pictures with a point and shoot. All that changed when I bought my new camera, and now I love taking photos in the DIY macro studio I built. I think about places we can go for a 'family outing' primarily based on whether or not it will have good photo opportunities. In short, its pervading every aspect of life! :)
I found this website through someones post at shutterstock.com. They said they honed their skills here, so that is why I'm here. I'm also looking forward to learning more about equipment.

Don't worry, the excitement will quickly fade.
Just kidding :)

Thanks all for the welcome!
I'm not stranger to critique (been working at fiction writing for ~ 2 years, and critique is how you improve in that field), and I'm not looking for the Flickr experience here (I have a Flickr account for that).
The photos of winning entries are a little intimidating, but I'm going to submit anyway, its the only way to get better.

ive been here since august last year was very intimidated and took me 2 weeks to enter a challenge scored 5.2-5.5 for a bit and got the bug back, now shoot for every challenge albeit not always as much effort in the challenges that im not a big fan of but now im consistently scoring over 6. ive won a blue ribbon and i have 2 photos currently at 6.8 and 6.75 so hopefully top ten in those two challenges ive learnt so much and im like a kid in a candy store :) got one friend signed up here recently and another has just bought a dslr and going to get him signed up when hes figured out how to use it.
i love this place hehe, im a moderator on a forum for my industry and ive been slacking off there since i found this site hehe :) |

Hi and Welcome! I am a recent newcomer as well (Nov 2011). I was feeling very intimidated as well, but the nice part is nobody is here to beat you up! Just make sure you make yourself familiar with the challenge rules before you submit and if you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. One piece of advice I can give you is to read the threads even if it seems the topic may not be clear or hold any interest for you. There is a great deal of technical advice to be found in some of them. You'll get a lot of different viewpoints many of which have helped me greatly in different areas.
Most important thing, have fun! |

Thanks Giles and Flaherma.
Digesting the challenge rules are indeed the most challenging part so far. :) |

Be sure to set your camera's time and date correctly, and to keep an unaltered or tagged copy of your original image files if you submit to the challenges.
There have been several discussions about how to save the originals in case you are asked for an "original" file for validation. Basically it's a matter of copying directly from the camera card to a file in your computer without opening moving or copying it using any kind of software, like Windows Media Player, Photoshop, Lightroom ect.
Anyway, Welcome, learn, enjoy, and remember that this entire site and all the input is computer generated. There are no flesh & blood people here besides yourself.

LOL MelonMusketeer, in that case, let me post in a language this website can understand:
if (challengePoster == "Osiris1975"):
1stPlace = true
unendingAccolades = true
infiniteRiches = true
lolJK = true (unless (1stPlace,unendingAccoldates,infiniteRiches == True))
Or if you prefer binary:
010011110111001101101001011100100110100101110011001100010011100100110111001101010010000001101001011100

1001010111001000100001
Thumbs up to whoever decodes the binary :)
