Hi! Does anybody know of a good source for white and/or black plexiglass in the USA? Tried Lowes but no luck.

| Sign shops have them. I have purchased a couple and they are very versatile and a good idea to have. A 2' by 3' piece will cost about $30. Just look in your yellow pages for sign shops and call them up ahead of hand to make sure they will sell you a piece to your size requirements. |

| Use yahoo yellow pages to find a commercial supplier if you want more than a little. I got a 4 foot by 8 foot sheet for about fifty dollars last year and use it for this and that. It cuts with wood working tools. and if you sand it it gives a nice rice paper look too;) |

This is UK but art supply shops sell that over here for small amounts (up to about A2 i think)

When looking for a sign shop, don't go to the franchise type of shop (i.e., FastSigns). Go to the sign shops that deal mainly with designers, you will get a much better price. Where are you in the US? I might be able to help you out with some. In a past life I was a signage designer.

| Check in the Yellow Pages under plastic or plexiglass. There will be many shops. Most will give you scraps of you just show up and ask ... even some pretty large ones. My wife has done this frequently and it works. |

As much as I hate to say this (I hate the Store and their business practices) We bought ours at Home Depot at a fairly reasonable cost. They had clear and I think smoke colored.

There are lots of places online that sell sheet plastic. You might try modernplastics.com. They carry a huge selection of plastic materials. They have translucent colored acrylic sheet (Plexiglas) in several colors. The price is $58.88 for a 4'x8' sheet. The have the same material in transparent or opaque colors as well.
When I lived in California I used to buy plastic sheet from S&W Plastics. They probably have a web site somewhere too.
Lots of glass stores carry Lexan or Plexiglas sheet also. They will usually cut it to any size you want.

Yeah, or I think the generic material is polycarbonate.
It's usefulness as an artificial lens implant was sparked when doctors noticed that RAF pilots who had gotten shards from their shattered canopies in the eye suffered no inflammatory response; the body saw it as completely inert.

I'm guessing Plexiglas might be for bouncing light, or using as a surface for shooting still life object on? Though I would like to know for sure, so I'm with you GuyinaTIE. Anyone?

It's sometimes used in place of glass in a picture frame, or in a window in place of a pane of (unbreakable) glass. It can be made quite shatter-resistant.
When you go into an inner-city Post Office, fast-food outlet, or check-cashing facility, it's those "bulletproof" windows they have in front of the tellers. |

I like to use clear lucite to put a subject on and the light the backdrop behind it to get a non distracting backround.
  
It lets you light the subject without having to worry about the shadows it might throw too. |

Well, polycarbonate is the generic name for Lexan. Plexiglas is a brand name for acrylic, which is much weaker than polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is what the bulletproof windows are made of in the bank, post office, etc. It's really amazing stuff. |

I guess sysop was asking though what he specifically was going to use black or white plexiglas for. The only thing I can imagine is for a background or something. |
