This one will give you the best bang for the buck IMO. Transfer specifics will depend somewhat on whether you're using a Mac or PC, but ideally you'd want to get a fast external card reader (Firewire or USB 3) and either drag the images directly from the card to a folder on your laptop or import via iPhoto if you're on a Mac. |

If you import VIA drag to iPhoto, will that tag the files, or will they still be ok for validation purposes?
Also would that apply to current and earlier versions of iPhoto, like iPhoto 08 ?
The question here is about Mac 10-5,8 OS.

Nearly all of my entries have been imported through iPhoto dating back to the first version. The original is always preserved. |

Thanks scalvert. I have been keeping a set of all camera files by drag and drop to monthly folders on the main HD, then moving them to external HD's after a couple of months. After putting the current cam files into the monthly file, I then go through them using "Preview" slideshow, and select the ones to be imported to iPhoto.
Sorry for the thread hijack. The card deal looks good. I still have a couple of Fuji S3 Pro's that use CF. Thanks again.

Sounds like a painful workflow MM. I just dump everything into iPhoto and delete the shots I don't like. Sort and edit at will, then export original if I need a file for validation. Oh, and I have that CF card in my 7D right now. |

It's cumbersome, but I like to have backup copies of the originals.
There have been times when someone needed some of the rejects that didn't make it to iPhoto, like when someone's relative dies and the relative is in the BG in some of the rejects, so I will probably just keep the same workflow going.
I did find that tagging each group in iPhoto with a description makes it a lot easier to find specific images later with the "Search" feature.
Does Aperture tag the imported image files?
