I was just having that same thought this morning! I've only been in a few challenges, but it gets kind of obsessive worrying about getting crummy scores! All week, I went back and forth about whether or not to even enter this challenge because it was too hard to come up with an interesting picture. Now I'm at 4.7 and I wish I had stayed out :( But we have to remember. Lots of great photographers are getting low scores this time. And. . . it's only other people's opinions. This one challenge doesn't determine our worth as hobby photographers, right ???

After doing my first pass through the Neon challenge I was not real surprised at how many shots of just Neon without any context there were. I was feeling glad that I actually took the time and thought to add stuff (generic term so as not to identify my picture) to my shot to give the neon some meaning beyond it's own existence. And I thought it was clever (so did most the people I showed it to).
Now I finally look at my score at it is awful. by far the worst I have ever done. I got the "None" comment as well. But I got a comment telling me that, while there was neon in the shot, what does that have to do with the rest of it? Arrrggg. It was not a real deep thinking shot and the connection was very obvious. And that comment from someone I thought would see it. I won't say anything about the lighting other than "anything else would have looked wrong given the context of the shot (believe me, I tried lot's of different levels)".

I gave any shot that was neon (whether sign, lights or bright colors) a 5 to start and worked up or down from there. I only docked a few of those for being bad photos. Sure, the average score given this time was probably lower than I usually give, but that was for lack overall of imagination and context on a challenge that just begged for that result.
Once again, imagination and humor are amply rewarded by being slapped down. Maybe I'll shave my armpit for the Nudes II challenge.

This is my thrid challenge and am very happy with how its going after the first two bombed....I spent alot of time on this one and love the pic I submitted
I had a 5.2857 before I went to work
I got home to a 5.2222
and am now up to

Several of the nine comments have mentioned the fact that my shot is NOT a dead-on picture of a neon sign, and that the other elements in the photo really add to the character and the feel of the image. Numbers like 8 and 9 are mentioned... words like awesome, exceptional, evocative... I am SO relieved that there are at least a few people out there who saw in the image what I saw... so that makes the dismal score less painful (LOL). It's not about the score... it's about me feeling like I was the only one who appreciated the beauty in something common, yet often overlooked. I do find it amusing, however, that all the complaining about "is neon photographing artwork" and "so many cropped shots of signs" is rampant... but those who chose a different avenue to shoot are being rated lower in reality. I'm really anxious to see what comes out with high scores... methinks it will be a neon sign and that will make all the complaining even more ridiculous, IMHO.

My score is hanging in there at 5.0 but I got a comment that just said
"no open signs" - my pic was NOT of an open sign. The person who left this comment has never entered a challenge and I guess just leaves votes. I wander what he gave me? |

Interestingly, of the four comments, only one really had anything say that could be considered either a positive or negative critique, It's also notable that all four came from members that have been on less than one month.
