| Neon and botany have both had some average and below average photos in them. Given the beauty of both mediums themselves in reality, one might expect to be disappointed. Still, I think there were some rather lousy submissions. I would agree with you, but seeing some of these does give me courage to someday submit a photo of my own, be that for better or worse. |

I don't know if you are being too harsh. As for me, I use the following criteria...
1. I only take into consideration as to whether the shot meets the challenge criteria if it blatantly does not. I.E. If there is the tiniest little sparkle of neon color in the pic...no plus or minus...but if there is not even a trace, it gets voted down.
2. Shots with excellent technical skill, but zero artistic quality (postcards) get a 5 OR shots with moderate technical skill but very lofty or interesting artistic quality get a 5.
4. Shots with intriguing artistic quality and good to excellent technical skill start to get ratings above a 6 OR "postcards" with EXCEPTIONAL technical skill (Ansel Adams types) start to get rating above 6.
5. Only one shot gets a 9-10 (my "first place" shot.)
6. I try to only give 5 - 10 shots in the 8 - 9 point range.
7. The rest are just how they rate.
Seems to be working so far :-)

Oh...and I just have to comment regarding MelisMatic...I don't know if I would consider her comments blunt or not, however I DO have to point out that of all the comments left on my submission, hers was not only the most constructive as far as identifying what could have improved the pic...she is also the only one so far who identified the intentional soft focus filter.
