UPDATE: Well I initially lost the deal to a very talented food photographer. I was a close second choice, but he did hire me to do some portraits of him and his brother as a Christmas gift for his Dad, so I did that for some easy Holiday cash. I did let him know I would be concerned having someone of her caliber working for such a modest fee and he did discuss it with her but she assured him she wanted to do it for the flexibility and a little extra cash. Well fast-forward a month and they had a little falling out about the rights to the photos. He told her (and me) that he planned on potentially using the images in a future cookbook. She expected a percentage of profits from that and when he asked her what percentage would be fair, she wouldn't answer - she just said they would have to negotiate that when the time comes. Ultimately it ruined their working relationship and so he offered me the gig with the understanding that we would both be free to use the images for whatever we wanted. I am still fine with that - although I know it will rub some of our DPC photogs the wrong way, but that's the difference between being a pro and being a whatever-I-need-to-do-to-make-some-extra-cash photographer. If he makes a million dollars on his cookbooks, so be it - won't bother me at all. Anyway, if I get through the year doing this, it will be the most money I've made in a year from photography (modest as it may be) and that makes me happy. Not that I want to do photography for a living, but it's nice to have several things I enjoy doing that I can make some money with. |

That is so cool! Well done. And besides, if he makes a million dollars from this cookbook, who's he likely to call to shoot for the next one? THEN negotiate a percentage! |

Hey awesome... I do think you should have at least asked for 5 or 10% of any future profits - but hey, if you're happy with the deal, then that's what's really important. |

Thanks all! Still a LONG way from being a career. Not even sure I want it to be, lest it ruin something I enjoy doing. ;-)
The blog is linked way down below, but here it is again. DJFoodie Blog - he has a great story and is an awesome chef and easy to work with. And yes, there will be lots of free food along the way. :) |

Just to wrap your mind around this (and I copy mercilessly from someone else's studies:
" Historically, to âcareenâ means to tilt or tip over and to âcareerâ means to rush, perhaps recklessly. This is a distinction that every copy editor in the United States knows by rote, but also one that nobody BUT a copy editor ever observes."
So, please don't tip anything over. On the other hand, how could you, Art Roflmao, not rush, perhaps recklessly, through life! |
