I'm one of the guys who run an Italian photography site and we recently discovered one man who had in his gallery only images stolen from the Internet. As you can imagine he's not a member anymore ;) |

It's not theft or stolen property, it's infringed work. There's a big difference, and although many people refer to them synonymously, the courts and law do not.
edit - Theft is a criminal offense, copyright infringement is almost always civil.

It works with IE8 and FF4.0... I don't have Safari...
I had to copy paste the url of the image since a drag/drop didn't work for me.

Ask for some free milk?
You're lucky. One of mine has been used on a porn site.

So... I requested that LBN credit me or remove my images and she did neither...
ETA, incidentally, myqyl, I don't mean to pick on you, but that is precisely the attitude that makes people think it's ok to use other people's images as their own. At the very least, send an email asking for credit. Sheesh! Especially if they're making money off it!

i commented on my image on lbn, but the site admin has to approve comments. they KNOW they're wrong and they just won't approve comments from "jerks like us" who want credit for our creations. |

If it had been in a site that was in English I probably would give it a try, but learning Hungarian seems like a lot of work to send a message that will almost certainly be ignored. I looked for a way to contact them and it seems the site is a co-op for independent folks to post their work (or our work as the case may be)...
For myself, it doesn't bother me, but for the sake of the community at large, I'll make another effort to send them a nasty-gram... I can understand that my indifferance could cause problems for real photographers that make their living here. But the language barrier and the low probability of action (I'm sure they will guess that I won't try to take legal action on the opposite side of the planet) makes it seem kind of futile...
But I'll give it another shot. |

i cant seem to track down the webhost officially. I also contact the company that designed the webpage through the link at the bottom, awaiting theirs and others responses. |

I emailed the web designer and asked him to pay my fee for the use of the image, or remove it (well, I asked in a nice way) So we'll see what happens. I mean, he got paid for designing the website. And it took me hours to do the post-processing on my shot, only fair he pays.
We should have a template letter somewhere on this site for 'pay or remove' type requests. |

Oh would anybody like a good laugh about my best facepalm to date?
Turns out he licensed my photo from istockphoto. Needless to say I had to apologise profusely in my reply to him. lol
Anyway, top tip - check your stock sites first before sending out take-down notices :) |

Most microstock sites provide no information about who downloads an image; that's one advantage (possibly) provided by macro-stock sites with rights-managed downloads ... |

Not to derail the thread, but if you have a popular image, how are you supposed to know who paid for it and who 'borrowed' it? |

i have nothing on stock sites and have not been contacted about use.
in fact, after applying watermarking filters yesterday, one of the search results (chocolate one) came up in google with the URL for the non-LBN website i linked, and in the google cache the image had the watermark, so they were directly linking to the source image with html code but nothing on their page alluded to it.
it's not there any more, but i'm willing to bet when i go home and pull the image back into google (or if someone here would like to check, by all means be my guest) it'll still be listed in the google image search on their website |

myqyl, both google and bablefish do decent enough translations into many languages. A simple letter, even with grammatical errors, should be enough.
Mike, I just typed a message in the contact box, and it fit just fine. The ISP is Iron Horse, and I'm now writing to tstirk@ih-online.com.
Will keep you posted.
FYI, I have nothing on any stock site but Getty. None of these images are on that site. |

Oooo, cool!
So I take it that I can paste the image's URL into the search box and it should do the same?
I'me trying to figure out how I can check the 2000 or so images I have posted here ... :-(

I messaged LBN through that site separately about each of the three images they use of mine without permission.
This is what I said, in case you care:
This image does not belong to you, and you have not acquired permission from the copyright owner to publish it in any form.
Either remove this image, give credit to the photographer (me), or pay me for the use of distributing it to your 474,000 clients.
Please also do this for the other two of my images of which you also have infringed on my copyright.
Also, if you do not want people who are not as civil as I am to take you to court, then I̢۪d give credit for every image or wordage that you do not own when you publish it.
Please email me when you have satisfied my request.
I will not take action for ten days, so you have time to comply and inform me.
I'll let you know if he/she ever responds.
