Dear yardsaleinspace,

Hi, got the lens just after Xmas, worked fine for a while now that I use it more the camera shutter curtain fails to open in any mode other than P, even then at some angles it wont fire consistently. I'm just letting you know about the problem. I realize I have no comeback as I have had it a month and a half. To have it serviced would be more than the lens cost. It took me two weeks to narrow it down to the lens, as I have 4 other lens that work seamlessly. I have tried cleaning all contacts etc but not going to attempt any repairs myself. C'est la vie.

Dear jdavid4fjc,

Hello jdavid4fjc, We are as surprised as we are saddened that you have had difficulties. The lens was thoroughly put through its paces before auction. It came from the collection of a top New England photographer for whom the auction was conducted. The photographer has since moved to Colorado. Our sincerest best wishes that there is a fix that is not prohibitive. Best Always, yardsaleinspace

Dear yardsaleinspace,

Thank you for your diligent and timely reply. No, I think my work is not the issue here, it is yours. Now if you offered a credit towards half the repairs, maybe I'd reconsider sharing my stuff. All the same, a few thousand people in America and Europe will wake up tomorrow to read our little correspondence. PS, you truly are a funny person. Warmest regards, jdavid4fjc.

Yes I know, I took the chance and it went against me.

To be continued......?

In this case, the seller most likely couldn't have known the aperture motor was about to go. Yes, it's annoying, but they are under no obligation whatsoever to provide any repair cost for your purchase unless you bought a specific warranty through them at the time. It's just a case of faulty mechanics at an inconvenient time.

To me, you're the one coming across as the "funny" one here.

I think this is one of the risks a person takes when buying second-hand items. If you want a warranty, then buy new.

Thanks, but what does wanting to see my work or loving Australia got to do with all of this. Smacks of a condescending attitude to me.

To be honest, I didn't read it that way.

It's hard to judge attitude from an email. But in this case I'd say they were just trying to be nice as they didn't have any solution to offer about the lens issue.

Why would they be condescending? - It's not like they were trying to con you on purpose.

i have to side with the seller as well. If there was an issue you'd have none right away but after a month and half you'd needed to either put it through vigorous testing if it was broke or chalk it up to bad luck that it failed. When you buy second hand goods its the chance you take.

The seller is in no way obligated to offer any refund and they probably didn't want to come across as being a dick even though they need to be form at times and they are trying to remain on good terms with you for whatever reason.

I think your response is a bit heavy handed.

Have to agree that they are under no obligation to you. The lens worked fine for a while. If it was defective upon receipt, that would have been different.

I had a similar situation, which actually involved a respected DPC member. I bought a used 20D from Scalvert in '09. After 2 1/2 months of usage, the shutter went crazy and was continuously actuating. The repair would have been about $260. Shannon felt bad about it and offered to contribute toward the repair. I told him that he sold it to me in good faith and that is just a risk I am taking buying used equipment. Ended up well, because Cannon gave me a sweet discount (about half the street price at that time) on a refurbished 50D through their loyalty program.

Could it be that you read it that way because you are a tad irritated at present and view them as the cause of your problems.

Sorry, but "When you have a chance, I'm really eager to see your work. Some of our medium format artists have sent us world-class images. We love Australia" is absolutely not condescending in my books.

Remember, sometimes bad things happen to nice people... but such is life.

Well, I have said to them I have no come back, and my title says buyer beware and I'm the foolish one, and this is a bitching thread ;) I already agree with most of what you're telling me and I do appreciate your interest. I received the lens on 27th Dec 2012 and had it 3 weeks before the problem started, had a week of trying again, then two weeks of narrowing it down (it's on a film camera btw). So yeah, just bad luck. I don't believe they were conning me and accept their good faith that the lens worked fine for them. If it was me selling it, and I am in retail and second hand goods, I would offer more than just good luck given the time frame. They are within their rights for sure, but the request to see my work and loving Australia is not a genuine response. I didn't mean for this to be a discussion, though it is a forum, and I can take as much arse kicking as anyone cares to give. I was just putting it out there for general interest and a reminder of the pitfalls of second hand goods.

Thanks for the warning about second-hand goods. Good deals are out there but there is always that risk. One of my first digital camera purchases (used) had the lens coating wearing off and I didn't even know enough to realize it.

I think part of your own issue is that you started out by saying you didn't expect compensation and you let them off the hook. You are probably a nice person who in the other person's shoes would immediately counter with an "Of course I'll partially reimburse you!" email, but unfortunately some people don't operate that way.
