I presume it's just a chunk on the "horizontal" but that it's complete on the "vertical". So why are there only 8 "points"?
And yes, that is CRAZY voting that would quite make one wonder. |

Ok,
I am officially the last person in this challenge without a comment. ;)
Some good stuff out there, especially considering the minimal editing.
Lots more not good, but still an enjoyable challenge to vote - it's nice to see what folks can do without the editing toys.
You have rated 77 of 77 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 77 images (99%) in this challenge.

Out of all the minimal challenges, I think this is one of the harder ones to have. None of the previous ones since the previous light on white (maybe with the exception of Henri Cartier-Bresson ), needed nearly as much control over your photo. Textures, numbers, trees, wide angle, out your favorite window, pattern, gave you a little more leeway. Yes, you still had to have a good shot, good exposure, but you weren't necessarily dealing with a subject and a background that you had to decide how to have stand out or blend -- where people were analyzing both parts. I think people are analyzing these shots more than the others.
For the most part, I don't see that much of a purpose for minimal editing. But for this type of challenge -- I think it's very good. This is a difficult lighting setup. It's good to learn it a bit better.
Do I think minimal is that great for landscapes? Not particularly. I think it just teaches us to go out during the golden hour. Or perhaps it teaches us to underexpose a sunset a bit to get it more vibrant. But I don't know that there's that much to learn there (except that I can't get a straight horizon for the life of me. :)
Minimal portrait? Probably a ton to learn there!
Hopefully minimal editing challenges will be picked carefully. This was a good one for practicing skills, imo.

Agree fully. I found sections from the book Light, Science, and Magic very helpful. Knowing this is minimal editing made me put a lot more effort into getting it right in camera. Ended up taking more than 120 shots -- variations on set up, settings, and positioning in a gradual progression of steps that eventually made a better image than where I started. (Thank goodness this didn't require the expense of film!) Very good learning experience.
For those who used white subjects but left their camera on one of the automatic modes (producing the predictable middle grey image), this may be an opportunity afterwards to learn about exposure compensation, and/or manual mode, even if lights, scrims, and reflectors get saved for another time.

You're not, I was really impressed too. My average score was higher in this challenge than most (maybe any) other. There was predictably a lot of the same thing (flowers, eggs) but they were all exposed & composed nicely for the most part. There were also some excellently creative images that rose to the top. I have go look up what minimal editing is now. |
