let's push our photography a little more towards "art"...

Take a single appropriate photograph and use your choice of post-processing or special effects/filters to make it look like a painting. Special Rule: Multiple captures are acceptable for HDR only, not to build a scene from different photos (at least not this time).
Expert Editing

My post post processing was oil paint and a brush. Probably not what you had in mind but it's a painting.

I like the idea.

I took this photo of reeds and then used a watercolor filter.

Yes!

I like the idea but don't see why it would need to be Expert editing. Advanced would be more than sufficient

I think the idea is to make it clear that the use of filters to significantly modify the image is allowed/expected -- Advanced with a Special Rule notation would be fine.

This one has a bit of painting feel to it

Most of my painting-like photos were created by other than pp means, e.g. motion blur, weird focus, alien forces... So maybe that is not what is exactly in mind?

I'd like to do this. If not as a challenge then a side challenge. (And then we wouldn't have to stop with just one.)

I was just thinking the same thing! Lets do it as a side challenge.

This would be fun.

You guys do realize this is an actual painting, right? Not a photoshopped application of a painting tool? Now THERE'S a side challenge! :-)

I think it needs to be Expert also so people can add textures to get effects like old cracked paint, brush strokes, etc.

.

I would want Expert rules to allow textures, brushes, distortion, fancy borders, multiple originals, etc. But people are afraid of Expert rules, so they will argue against it.

2009 was my first flip'n'blend. There were many creative side challenges in those days. I had a lot of fun. DPC has become a much more conservative place lately.

Minimal Editing - now THAT's a true "challenge."

But Expert Editing with a Special Rule that bars adding major elements digitally or compositing from multiple images to add major elements (you could then create a brush or texture from a different photo if you wanted).
05/04/2013 08:24:01 PM · #21
No. No. No. I want to be able to create major elements by compositing several different photographs. I also like to create a brush or a texture from another photo. I can't be worried about breaking rules when I do it, it takes all the fun away. What about an Expert rules challenge with a Special Rule that requires the use of several different photographs combined to create new major elements? It could be paired with a Minimal editing challenge: take any photo you like & post it to the challenge under the Minimal rule set. It would be fun to vote on both at the same time.

I could go either way, but I do love combining different photos.

Not enough of a challenge IMO. It'd turn into a means of showing off your Photoshop skills and not much more. Adding a special rule that limits you to one shot would force you to first take a photo that would look good if the scene were re-imagined by a painter, which I think would be wicked cool and be in line with the (original) intent of the website.

nothing is stopping you from doing that. why force it on other people? and who says my original photos can't survive on their own? that's just silly.

and who says I must be forced to take a good photo? more silliness.
