On the tutorial by Tim Jenson posted here "Improving Highlights and Shadows", there was a way to select the highlights, control-alt-tilde, I believe it was, but since photoshop has updated several times since this tutorial I have noticed it has stopped working. I really hate not being able to use the function, because I was able to achieve fantastic results. Does anybody know how to achieve the same function on the new versions of Adobe Photoshop. I'd really appreciate the help, and maybe then we can decide on how to update Tims original Tutorial, which I particularly loved. Thanks.

duplicate layer

desaturate new layer

Select>Color Range

Use the Quick Mask, and just select the brightest bits.

With that being said - why not use the shadows/highlights tool? Works pretty darn well.

Allows for far greater control. Highlights have different strengths and this way can select each of those. Plus this method can be used for the midtones as well as the shadows

So the short answer is ctrl-alt-2
Interesting, glad this was brought up.

yep, ctrl-alt-2 is the keyboard shortcut equivalent without menu diving to get to the select highlights destination as well.... luminosity masks are a good thing to know! also using the selections of your highlights, midtones or shadows opened as an adjustment layer i.e. curves, levels,exposure etc. will often also be useful in this process - the real control comes by creating a new smart object layer from your selection and applying camera raw as an applied filter! (if you are using photoshop cc)
