Hello All,
I recently upgraded to a D7000 and im looking to buy a zoom lens, mainly for wildlife photography (birds, butterflies etc) but im on a disability pension so my budget is very limited, I did have a Nikkor 55-200mm lens but needing some extra money to buy the D7000 so i sold it thinking i wouldnt use it but now realise i should of kept it.
I'd love the Nikkor 80-400mm but that is out of my price range, the Nikkor AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6G may be ok but i know with wildlife photography you really need a big zoom.
I have heard people trying these no name brands such as Samyang with mixed results but i have a feeling they are more a gimick than anything else. |

I've just ordered a nikon 55-300 vr, which in the UK is nearly half the price of the 70-300 vr.
It get good reviews for the price, nearly as good as the 70-300 but that can be used for full frame.
Anything over 300mm gets expensive.

sigma 70-300 APO has always been a very good lens on a budget. |

I would look for a used lens, if yoy have any local clubs ask around especially any wildlife photography clubs because they use longer lenses and tend to want to upgrade. I got my 80-400 a couple of years ago 600.00. |

Thanks for the replies everyone, your help has given me a few choices to look into, much appreciated.
Out of curiousity has anyone used the Nikon-70-300mm, there is a secondhand one on ebay that is AU$119.00 in perfect condition according to the seller.

I think the 70-300mm is a great lens, and for that price it's a tremendous value. Not super strong at its 300mm limit, but with the crop factor it'll give you a lot of reach. Can't really go wrong at that price. |
