I'm so used to my D700 with grip that though the D800 is a bit chunkier, I think I will miss the grip, specialyy for portraits and events.

What do you fell/think about this camera with the grip?

I also saw that there are some third party grips with magnesium alloy contruction that should be very similar to the Nikon one. Any experience with third party grips?

Thank's in advance.

I've been looking for a grip for my D700 and if I found a third-party that had magnesium alloy construction, I'd likely have made a purchase by now. I can't justify $240 for Nikon's grip, but the plastic construction of the third-party grips has me concerned.

If you've found the build quality you like at the right price, I'd probably take the gamble. Are you currently using Nikon's grip or a third-party on your D700?

I brought my D800e second hand with nikon original grip but never use it yet .
This is question of convenience and what is your preference of regular use.
The D800e battery is drying faster then in my old D7000 ( same battery type)
In my old D7000 I could shot ~ 1000 pictures VS in D800e ~600 ,
so for wedding or other long Season of photography it's better to use the grip.

I have the Nikon grip for the D800, and I have a hard time shooting without it. I have found that the battery life is good enough that 1 battery gets me through pretty much any situation, but I like how the grip helps balance out the weight with heavier lenses. It just feels a whole lot better with it on, and of course it's great for ergonomics of shooting vertically.

I have a Nikon grip for my D300s, which I never remove from the camera, either.

I just ordered a Vello grip from B&H for my old D300, which I'm starting to use a little more (I like keeping it in the car with some other older equipment, because you just never know when you might want to have a decent camera handy). The Vello grip cost just $50-something, and gets good reviews, so I'm anxious to see how it goes. I don't anticipate using the D300 enough to justify getting the Nikon grip for it, but for $50, the Vello will likely suit just fine!

This is exactly why mine only comes off if I'm really trying to cut grams on a climb or a really long hike. This is especially noticeable for me when shooting with the 28-70, which is my standard lens. I have a Nikon grip and I've been happy with its construction. Like Scott noted, I would have considered an offbrand if they were magnesium but I never found one that was. I also enjoy the flexibility the Nikon one provides in being able to use three different types of batteries for my camera in the grip, which was another feature that others didn't have.

I really value the vertical grip.

O ordered a third party grip, the Kaavie magnesium alloy version. About 110 euros. It should arrive next week, I'll give you my feedback.
